The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, June 30, at 6:30 a.m.

The special speakers were John and Betsy York. Betsy is the library and media specialist at Central Aroostook High School. She spoke of the four things that she sees as part of her job. She is a teacher — helping the students think critically about what they hear and read; a partner with the other teachers — making sure that the library is stocked with whatever materials are needed each semester; an information specialist — keeping up with any law or rule changes; and a program administrator — doing the budgets for the CAHS and Fort Street libraries and purchasing software.

Betsy was recognized as the 2008 Walter J. Taranko Media Specialist of the Year for the State of Maine.  Superintendent Roger Shaw was able to surprise her with this announcement — having her set up and run the video equipment for a special award to be presented during an assembly. Shaw proceeded to list the qualifications that made the person so deserving of the award — until Betsy finally realized that he was talking about her! Congratulations, Betsy.
John York is a vocational education technician, groundskeeper, summer school instructor and environmental specialist. He spoke mainly about caring for the athletic fields at CAHS. This past year, the baseball field was worked on. The special surface on the baselines and batter’s boxes handle quite a bit of water – a fact that has lead to the playing of some games this year that would normally have been called due to rain. CAHS has a large sports complex — there could be several games going at the same time, if necessary. It typically takes around three and a half hours to ready the baseball field for a game.

Rotary Golf Tournament

This year’s Golf Tournament saw 39 golfers out on the links. Winning First Division Gross was Phil Pelletier, First Net was Andrew McQuade. Winning Second Division Gross was Harry Orser, Second Net was Francis Cyr.
Others placing were: First Division Gross: Craig Allen — second, Josh McGuire — third.  First Division Net: Al Leach – second, Tim Carlson — third.  Second Division Gross: Tom Trafford — second, Tyler Perry — third. Second Division Net: Guy Hanks — second and Glen Mahan — third.
