McAtee wins long drive qualifying event

    Ron McAtee of Presque Isle earned the right to travel to Pennsylvania next month for the Eastern regionals of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship following his performance at a local qualifer in Mars Hill July 11. 

    McAtee, despite facing a strong headwind, drove a ball 287 yards to win a $1,000 prize package and an opportunity to move on to the next round of competition.
    John Post of Presque Isle was the runner-up with a distance of 272 yards and also qualified.
    Other participants were Tim Mahon of Mars Hill, Phil Adams III of Bangor and Jerry Novak of Salem, Mass.
    The competition was facilitated by Agile Concepts and sponsored by Katahdin Trust Company, Pepsi Bottling Group, Edward Jones Investments, Twin Pines Golf Course, Augusta Country Club, Aroostook Valley Country Club, Horizons Wind Farm and Smith Optics.
    The Mars Hill Rotary Club provided volunteers for the competition and aeriel photography was provided by Walter Mosher.
    Chris Keegan of Agile Concepts said he hopes the local long drive competition will become a mainstay and plans are being formulated for next year’s event.
