Porter Gervais of New Limerick has signed a national letter of intent to play golf for Potomac State College of West Virginia University.
Potomac State is a top-ranked NJCAA School and Gervais will be adding to a highly successful program. He will be part of a talented freshmen class for the Catamounts, and expectations are higher for the team over the next few years.
In the past two years, the Catamount golf team has been ranked as high as third in the nation, and has finished 12th and 10th in the nation the last two seasons. Overall, the team has had a representative at the national tournament for 13 straight years.
“I have high expectations for this year’s golfers, and Porter is going to be a big part of that,” said head coach Aaron Edwards.
Gervais will take an impressive resume with him to Potomac State, which features a Junior Championship at Houlton Country Club in 2004, a Division II Club Championship in 2006, and he had his first hole-in-one at the age of 13. In high school competition, Gervais was named to the MPA All Conference team all four years of high school and PVC Champion in 2006. In 2006 and 2007, he was the MPA Regional Runner-up. In 2007, he took home honors such as a third-place finish in the MPA State Championship and was a New England Golf Championship qualifier. Rounding out his accomplishments was a 2008 MPA Regional Individual Championship. For his career, Gervais has a nine-hole low score of 29 (-7), and an 18-hole low of 64 (-8).
While at Potomac, Gervais will be majoring in engineering. In high school, he was a member of the National Honors Society and graduated with a rank of 18th in his class.
“Porter has a rare combination of great athletic ability and the ability to be a great student,” said Edwards. “As a coach, this is exactly what you are looking for in every athlete, and I am excited to have Porter on the team this season.”
Gervais will start off his college golfing career on Aug. 30 as the Catamounts start their Conference title defense at the WPCC Opener. The PSC golf team is the three-time defending Conference Champions.
Gervais is the son of Marty and Leslie Gervais.
