Local runners shine in Beach to Beacon 10K
    Several local runners turned in excellent showings at the annual TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race, held Saturday in Cape Elizabeth.
    Robert Gomez of Biddeford, a former Limestone/MSSM standout runner, was 26th overall out of 5,624 runners representing 43 states and 16 countries. His time was 32 minutes and 14 seconds.
    P.J. Gorneault and Evan Graves, both of Caribou, also made the top-50 in the prestigious event. Gorneault was 37th in 32:51 and Graves 48th  in 33:21.  
    Gorneault placed third in the 30-34 age division and Graves was eighth in the 25-29 age division.
    Spencer McElwain of Caribou took 62nd place in 33:55. Tim Freme of Caribou was 155th in 37:31, Steve Desmond of Caribou 202nd in 38:47, Jordan Powers of Woodland 339th in 41:39, Brian Powers of Woodland 347th in 41:46, Jeff Irving of Caribou 368th in 41:55 and Carl Soderberg of Caribou 376th in 41:59.
    Art Thompson of Limestone was fifth in the 75-79 age division, coming in at 1:10:52.2.
Golf team meeting
    A meet the coach/sign-up meeting for students in grades 9-12 interested in playing on the Caribou High School golf team will be held Wednesday Aug.12. The meeting will be in the high school cafeteria from 3:30-4 p.m. Any student, male or female, wishing to play should attend.
JV soccer round-robin
    The 12th annual Junior Varsity Soccer Round Robin will be hosted by Presque Isle High School at the Johnson Athletic Complex Wednesday, Aug. 12.
    Games will be played on three different fields from 3:30-5:40. Madawaska, Central Aroostook, Caribou and Presque Isle are the participating teams.

PIHS Invitational slated for Aug. 13 and 15
    The 17th annual PIHS Invitational Soccer Tournament will be held Thursday, Aug. 13 and Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Johnson Athletic Complex.
    Teams participating in this year’s event are Fort Kent, Ashland, Caribou, Madawaska, Houlton, Van Buren and Presque Isle. Round-robin games begin Thursday, Aug. 13 at 3 p.m. and run until 6:55 p.m. that day. The Saturday, Aug. 15 round-robin schedule is from 8:30 a.m. to 11:25 a.m. The top two girls teams will play in the championship beginning at 11:35 a.m. The top two boys teams square off at 12:15 p.m.

Junior League team falls to Houlton
    Caribou hosted Houlton in a Junior League baseball game Thursday, with the visitors tallying five runs in the first inning en route to an 8-5 victory.
    The loss was Caribou’s first of the summer.
    Kyle Bouchard and Hunter Hanning shared the pitching chores for Houlton, combining for 10 strikeouts and scattering eight hits.
     Caribou pitchers Sean Madore, Matt Milliard and Matt Curry handled Caribou’s pitching and struck out eight, allowing seven hits along the way.
    Matt Milliard had three hits to lead Caribou, while Matt Curry and Matt Frost added one each.
