A total of 36 cyclists tackled the 24-mile 2009 SpudCycle bicycle race under clear skies Sunday, July 19. Devin Higgins of Presque Isle narrowly defeated Paul Magoon of Cornville, Joseph Ewings of Littleton and Sam Evans-Brown of Lewiston in a furious sprint finish, with all four racers finishing within a second of each other.
Sarah Gahagan of Presque Isle finished a few minutes ahead of Stephanie Caverhill of Caribou to capture the women’s title.
Age group winners were: ages 16-29, Evans-Brown; ages 30-39, Magoon and Caverhill; ages 40-49, James Wolhsemutz of Old Town and Frances Prest of Presque Isle; ages 50-59, Von Perry of Easton and Loretta Harmon of Caribou; ages 60-and-older, Marcel Bastide of Orrington.
Wolhsemutz and Steve Wall of Lynn, Mass. won the two intermediate sprints, or primes, for cash Andrew Bailey of Fort Kent and Jordann Coiley of Fort Fairfield won the 12-mile youth race which also included Luke Bailey of Fort Kent, Josh Doody of Grove City, Calif., Graham Freme of Caribou and Dillon Beckum of Caribou.
