EASTON – Rachel Churchill, a 2009 graduate of Presque Isle High School, is one of five U.S. winners of the 2009 McCain Group Scholarships. She is the daughter of James Churchill Jr., an employee at the McCain Foods USA plant in Easton.
Churchill plans to attend the University of Maine where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree. Her goal is to help others as a counselor or psychologist in her hometown.
Named to the PIHS honor roll, Churchill received awards for academic excellence, mathematics and citizenship. She was a member of the junior varsity and varsity cheering squad and received an award in track and field. She was an active member in her community collecting items for the Salvation Army, homeless shelter and treats for the animal shelter.
The 2009 McCain Group Scholarships have been awarded to a total of 10 children of McCain Group employees from the United States and Canada. Each of the scholarship winners who will be attending college will receive a total of $16,000. Students who study a two-year technical or nursing program will receive $9,500 split over the next two years.
Winners are selected based on their scholastic achievement, extra-curricular activities, financial need, an essay, and a personal interview. More than $2 million in scholarships have been awarded since the program began and more than 50 percent of all scholarship winners have continued their education to earn advanced master’s degrees and doctorates.
“McCain is a leader in North America in the post-secondary scholarship support that it offers to dependents of its employees,” said Dr. John Anderson, chair of the McCain Group Scholarship Program and former president of the University of New Brunswick. “These students are tomorrow’s leaders and we are proud to support young people who are going to make differences in the U.S. and Canada.”
