more than potatoes;
It holds barrels of memories
tied to the past.
used in the harvest,
A way of life that is fading fast.
The truck drove through the field and stopped at a barrel;
The grapples were placed
on the rim,
Then the barrel was hoisted
upon the truck bed,
And the truck was packed
to the brim.
Off the truck went
to the potato house bin,
And returned to the field
to start anew.
The days were long
and the work was hard,
But we were proud of our job when the days were through.
So when the leaves begin
to turn wherever you are,
In the fall of the year,
in cool September;
Pause to reflect on those Aroostook County days,
And may this little truck
help you remember.
This poem was written by Carol Ireland Harrell a former Limestone resident and is part of the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum collection.
POTATO TRUCK – The farm truck would go up and down the rows loading barrels full of potatoes.
