Presque Isle also shut out both Bucksport and Mount Desert Island over the weekend to move out to a quick 3-0 start.
The following is a recap of girls soccer games from Sept. 1-7.
Presque Isle 6, Mount Desert Island 0 — At Presque Isle Monday, the Wildcats spent the Labor Day holiday improving their record to 3-0 on the season with the team’s third shutout of the season. Chelsea Nickerson had two goals and an assist to pace the Wildcats, while Kayla Richards added a goal and an assist. Jenna Stephenson, Kailee Ireland and Shae Adler also scored goals for the Wildcats.
Kelsey Park had two saves on three shots for Presque Isle, while Elizabeth Sargent had 18 saves on 26 shots for MDI.
Presque Isle 10, Bucksport 0 — At Presque Isle Saturday, the Wildcats exploded with a 10-goal effort in their second game of the season. Chandler Guerrette, Nickerson and Richards each scored two goals for the Wildcats (2-0). Stephenson, Brooke Long-Postell, Megan Ireland and Alyssa Huston each had one goal.
Park made one save on one shot for Presque Isle, while Carrie Daigle had 14 saves on 31 shots for Bucksport.
Presque Isle 2, Caribou 0 — At Caribou Wednesday evening, two second-half, breakaway goals carried the Wildcats to victory over Caribou. The game was Presque Isle’s first of the season, while the Vikings fell to 1-2.
Neither team was able to crease the net in the first half, thanks to stellar play by both goalies. Wildcat netminder Kelsey Park finished with six saves on 20 shots, while Caribou goalie Doak had a busy night, stopping 20 of 30 shots. The Wildcats held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
“The first half it looked like it was our first game,” Presque Isle coach Ralph Michaud said. “We’ve been practicing against each other for a month now and I think the girls were tired of beating on each other. In the second half, we got more into the stride of the game.”
For the Vikings, a second-half adjustment did not pan out as well as Caribou coach Albert had hoped.
“We made an adjustment at halftime to try to strengthen our midfield and stretch the field, but we were not able to get the ball where we needed to,” coach Albert said. “We had a few good chances early on that we couldn’t get in the net. If we had gotten one or two of those, it would have been a different game.”
Guerrette broke the scoring ice with 31:36 to play in the second half as she scored on a breakaway goal that was initially blocked by Doak. The shot but trickled away from the goalie and Guerrette alertly scooped up the rebound and sent a right-footed shot into the open net.
Megan Ireland added an insurance goal when she scored with 9:30 remaining as she sent a low-lining shot past the outstretched arms of Doak, who dove to her left in an attempt to block the shot.
Staring the season off against a County-rival with Caribou was something new for the Wildcats.
“I don’t know if we have ever done that before,” Michaud said. “We just played one of toughest games of the year in the very first game. [Caribou] was ready for us.”
Youth is certainly served for the Wildcats this year as eight of the 16 field players are sophomores or freshmen.
“What I thought was excellent was the fact that our two goals were scored by freshmen,” Michaud said. “They [Guerrette and Ireland] gave us a real nice spark coming off the bench.”
Coach Albert said his defense was a bit over-aggressive at times in Wednesday’s game.
“There are a few things we can work on,” he said. “Presque Isle played better than us. I don’t know if they are a better overall team, but tonight they were.”
Limestone-MSSM 4, Washburn 3 — At Limestone Friday, the Eagles scored three second-half goals to pull out the narrow victory over Washburn. Stephanie Leighton scored twice in the second half, while Jasmin Cote added a solo shot to complete the three-goal barrage for the Eagles. Daniele Pelkey scored in the first half for Limestone-MSSM (3-3-1).
Lindsey Blackstone had a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Jordan Chandler and Kristi Sperrey also scored.
Rayah Saucier made seven saves on 14 shots for Washburn while Audra Kirk saved five of eight shots for the Eagles.
Madawaska 4, Central Aroostook 0 — At Madawaska Friday, the Panthers were blanked on a tough road game. Ashley Estabrook had a busy day in net for the Panthers as she faced 20 shots, stopping five. Valerie Parker had two goals, while Nicole Cyr and Megan Ouellette each had one for the Owls. Amanda Nadeau had four saves on nine shots.
Ashland 4, Hodgdon 0 — At Hodgdon Thursday, playing on a rough field, the Hornets handed Hodgdon a shutout loss. Jessica Jimmo scored a pair of goals to lead the Hornet attack, while Macie Pelkey had a goal and an assist and Brooke Labelle had one goal.
Ashland held a commanding 32-5 advantage in shots and an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Taylor Baker and MacKenzie Belanger were relatively untested sharing time in net for Ashland as the two combined for five saves. Emmaly Jurson had 12 saves for the Hawks.
Fort Fairfield 1, Washburn 0 — At Fort Fairfield Thursday, the struggles continue for Washburn as the host Tigers pulled out a 1-0 victory thanks to a late goal by Kylie Plourde. Meghan Saucier and Rayah Saucier combined to make four saves on eight shots for the Beavers. Katy Donovan had four saves on nine shots for the Tigers.
Ashland 4, Easton 2 — At Presque Isle Tuesday, the Hornets (3-0) scored three first half goals and cruised through the second half for the victory over Easton (4-4-1). Ashland’s Brooke LaBelle broke the scoring ice with an unassisted goal in the first half. Shea Craig made it 2-0 as she converted a feed from Macie Pelkey and Pelkey scored shortly after to stake a 3-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Hornet Jessica Jimmo got into the scoring action with an unassisted goal. Easton’s Ariana Babineau scored a pair of goals off assists from Carla Halvorson and Samantha Fuller.
Easton goalie Taylor Burtt made 20 saves on 36 shots, while Ashland netminder Taylor Baker made 10 saves on 20 shots.
Washburn 2, Central Aroostook 1 (OT) — At Washburn Tuesday, Meghan Saucier broke a 1-1 tie with her second goal of the game, coming with 1:16 remaining in overtime to lead Washburn to its first win on the season. Angie Hernandez assisted on Saucier’s game-winning goal.
Brittini Mosher scored the lone goal for the Panthers off an assist by Kristen Long with 31:05 remaining in the first half. Saucier knotted the game at 1-1 with 34:45 to play with an unassisted goal in the second half.
Rayah Saucier stopped 10 of 16 shots for the Beavers, while Ashley Estabrook had 17 saves on 27 shots for the Panthers.
“Washburn played very well,” Central Aroostook coach Dave Collins said. “Had we played to our potential, this wouldn’t have been a contest. [It] seems like we have hit a funk and have forgotten how to play.”
Fort Fairfield 3, Hodgdon 1 — At Fort Fairfield Tuesday, Emily Blaisdell, Courtney Churchill and Kacie York each netted one goal to lead the Tigers to victory over the visiting Hawks. Brooke Beaulieu had two assists for Fort Fairfield.
Kensie Palmer scored the lone goal for Hodgdon.
Katy Donovan had six saves on eight shots for Fort Fairfield, while Emily Jurson had 17 saves on 23 shots for the Tigers.
