United Methodist Women
The fall meeting of the Mars Hill UMW met in the church vestry at noon on Sept. 14, with 13 members present. After the table blessing, the members enjoyed their sandwiches brought from home before enjoying the dessert furnished and served by hostess Janice Footer. After an hour of socializing, the business meeting was called to order by President Elaine Bailey. She led in the UMW Purpose Pledge and Prayer.
A special highlight of the meeting was each member telling of their acts of kindness since the last meeting. The secretary’s report was read and approved as read. Treasurer Diane Ketchum gave an up-to-date report since last June’s meeting. She reported that approximately $767 was realized from the June Trash and Treasure Sale.
Several thank-you notes were read. President Elaine announced that the Annual UMW District Meeting will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Presque Isle United Methodist Church. It was suggested that each unit bring items for the Red Cross Youth Kits. Members voted to buy $25 worth of items to take. President Elaine passed out an updated list for the Prayer Chain. Members voted to sponsor the local Girl Scout troop.
Alma Smith volunteered to be responsible for sending out cards to the sick members from the group. She is replacing Kay Gilman, who recently passed away. Kay faithfully performed her duty for seven years — remembering the sick and others with nice cards of comfort.
Program Chairman Janice Footer presented a very interesting and informative program showing a DVD on “A Journey in Missions.” The film showed the UMW Global Conference held in Anaheim, Calif., in 2006. This Conference is held every four years. Janice gave a report on a recent meeting she attended as secretary of the UMW Northern District.
After the benediction, the meeting was adjourned. Members attending were: Elaine Bailey, Diane Ketchum, Donna Brewer, Ruth Sylvester, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Frances Banks, Alma Smith, Janice Footer, Goldie Folsom, Carol Guiggey, Clara Hussey and Daisy Campbell, who is from Perth Andover, New Brunswick.
