Writers Group to hold book signing

CARIBOU — Several Aroostook County writers who have gathered their work into the book Breathe, Volume 1 will be on hand for a book signing at Lion’s Share Used Books from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.     The writers featured in the book are regular members and friends of the Breathe Writers’ Group, which was established four years ago at UMPI. While the group has moved around to a few other locations, it is currently back on the UMPI campus as a University club and has about a dozen active members.
“We are more than a writing group. We are a network of members, visitors and temporary partakers woven together into a community,” group founder Wendy Koenig said. “In our first book together, we share our hopes, dreams, sorrows and failures.”
Koenig pointed out that there are all levels of writing featured in the book, from novice to advanced. Some group members have been published, while some have not. However, Koenig said all members of the group seek to share through their first joint publication.
Featured in the book are: Cherie Black, an UMPI graduate and a founding member of Breathe; Laura Mooney, a graduate of UMPI who is currently working at a school for children with special needs in Pennsylvania; Jessica Mayne, a current UMPI student who designed the book’s cover; Carla Cavender, who co-owns Lion’s Share Books in Caribou; Larry Bubar of Presque Isle, who is the author of six books; Vince Michaud, who is from Drummond, New Brunswick and has co-authored one other book; and Koenig, an UMPI graduate who has several other books in print.
Also present for the day will be Lloyd Archer, a poet from Aroostook County who has written over 50 poems in four volumes. “I grew up fishing, hunting and camping and continue to do so as much as possible. Much of what I write is from these experiences. I often write about common little things I notice as I go along through life.” Lloyd said.
Refreshments will also be served and there will be door prize drawings (no purchase necessary). For more information about this event, please contact Jim or Carla Cavender at Lion’s Share Used Books on Herschel Street or call 493-4808. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
