Football doubleheader Saturday at Bob Ruth Field, Community Park;

Madawaska vs. Guilford/Houlton vs. Huskies

    Charleston is an idyllic and faraway spot. The football field, nestled in sunshine and autumn gold, sits below the historic former Higgins Prep, the site of many gridiron memories of years gone by.     The Houlton Knights traveled there with a strong contingent of fans from around the state to play Guilford.
    The Knights barely had time to notice any of this as they raced up and down the field 10 times to defeat host Guilford 70-20.
    Head coach Brian Reynolds inserted his junior varsity squad as the varsity built up a 42-7 lead before halftime.
    “It was an opportunity at this point to give some much needed experience to our younger players. They responded well,” Reynolds said. “The whole team contributed and kicked it into high gear.”
    For the varsity, Caleb Black had four scores and 71 yards on four touches. His work was over. Chris Ruth ran 41 yards for another tally. Chris Taylor picked off an errant Guilford pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.
    The junior varsity took over and played respectable offense as Tim Chase ran for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Joel Redman and Don DeVoe added one each under the guidance of quarterbacks Corey Morehead and Joey Gould.
    Redman carried the ball 18 times for 72 yards.
ImageBLOCKED – Houlton’s Brian Tuttle works on getting through as a defender throws a block on him. TheKnights will be in action at home on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Bob Ruth Field.
    Both Knight defenses proved to be strong. Varsity veterans Kyle Kramer, Jon Silliboy, John Ramsey, Dan Toby, Quinn Harris, Brian Tuttle and Jesse DaEira stifled any Guilford threat. They forced a safety. Kramer had a sack. Guilford was held to 40 halftime yards.
    The junior varsity defense with Morehead, Chase, DeVoe, Redman, Gould, Ramsey, Jacob McGuffen, Sam St. John, Colby Seeley-Jones, Nick Sewell, Micah McCarthy and Caleb Jewell limited Guilford to two scores over the final two quarters. Sewell had a sack.
    The Knights are now 5-0.
    On Saturday, Oct. 17, a double header takes place in the Shiretown when Madawaska travels to Houlton to take on Guilford at 2 p.m. followed by a League game between the Knights and Caribou Huskies, scheduled for 5 p.m. at Bob Ruth field. The game wraps up the regular season.
    Injured Caleb McGary and Jesse Willigar are listed day-to-day. Zack Mailloux and Darrell Hanning are listed as probable. Standout Eddie Flint will be working the sidelines for coach Reynolds.
    The playoffs begin the following week. Houlton is the number-one seed.
Booster club news
    The football booster club is looking for help in preparation for Saturday’s upcoming games. The concession stand and 50/50 folks will be on hand. The field needs to be re-striped and roped off for an anticipated large crowd. Volunteers may contact coach Reynolds or any of the staff and booster club members.
