Soccer playoffs looming: Lady Warriors No. 1

    The local soccer teams are gearing up for the final week of the regular season, with the last countable game on Oct. 20 before the playoffs begin on Oct. 23-24.
    The top eight girls teams will compete in the postseason. In Class D girl’s action, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors remain undefeated with a 13-0 record for 89.4133 tournament index points, followed by Ashland (10-2, 46.1224); Deer Isle-Stonington (6-4-2, 36.6327); Easton (9-4-1, 36.4065); Limestone (6-5-1, 34.0689); CAHS (4-7-1, 32.4107); Fort Fairfield (6-4-1, 30.7015) and Bangor Christian (5-5-1, 29.4770). Katahdin is 14th with a 1-10 record and 3.8265 tournament index points and East Grand is 15th with a 0-8-1 record.

    In Class C girls, the top 10 teams will qualify for the playoffs. The Houlton Lady Shires are now in ninth place with an 8-2 record worth 39.5833 points. They trail no. 1 Orono (9-2-1, 80.4209); Central (10-2, 72.3214); Fort Kent (8-1-1, 70.0255); Washington Academy (9-3, 61.8864); George Stevens (8-3, 60.9949); Foxcroft Academy (8-3-1, 56.2500); Searsport (7-5, 46.7092) and Penobscot Valley (6-4-2, 40.4337) and in 10th is Madawaska (6-4-1, 39.4048). The Hodgdon Lady Hawks are in 18th with a 3-8 record for 2.3377 points.
    In Class C, the top 10 teams will compete in postseason play.
    The Houlton Shiretowners are seventh (7-1-2, 42.0281 points) in Class C, trailing Madawaska (8-2-1, 79.5918); Washington Academy (13-0, 68.5597); Penobscot Valley (13-0, 62.0408); Orono (12-1, 61.5306); Fort Kent (6-3-2, 60.9694); Foxcroft Academy (7-3-3, 47.9209) and finishing in eighth, Penquis Valley (6-6-1, 35.9311); ninth, George Stevens (5-7, 35.5357) and 10th, Dexter (6-7, 28.5969).
    The Hodgdon Hawks are 18th with a record of 1-9-1 and 5.9253 points.
    In Class D, the top 10 teams will be competing in the playoffs. The Southern Aroostook Warriors have dropped to number five with a 10-2 record and 51.1480 points behind no. 1 Calvary Chapel (10-1-1, 80.9478); Bangor Christian (10-2, 59.5918); CAHS (9-3, 59.4388); Ashland (9-3, 53.8265).
    In sixth, Wisdom (9-3, 48.8404); Machias (8-3-1, 46.2765); Deer Isle-Stonington (9-2-1, 42.8571); Shead (5-6, 32.6415) and Limestone (3-8-1, 25.0638). Katahdin falls into 14th with a 2-8-1 record and 15.3699 points and East Grand is 18th with a 1-5-1 record and 3.6526 tournament index points.
    Boys wrap up:
    Shead 6, East Grand 0 – Last Saturday in Eastport, Abe and Alex Brittain combined to block 13 of 26 shots faced, as the Vikings lost to Shead.
    The Vikings had eight shots on Shead’s goal.
     Houlton 2, Fort Kent 4 – Last Friday night in wet, slippery conditions, the Shires were unable to overtake visiting Fort Kent, who gave Houlton its first loss on the year.
    The Warriors were ahead 2-0 at intermission and stayed ahead with two goals by Thomas Levesque in the second half.
    Houlton’s Micah Goetsch and Dylan Gard scored unassisted second-half goals. Houlton goalie Jared Tapley stopped 11 of 19 shots, while Fort Kent’s Brandon Hartt had 13 saves on 25 shots.
    East Grand 0, Wisdom 5 — Last Friday, the Brittains combined in goal for East Grand, stopping 17 of 22 shots in the shutout loss.

    Wisdom had five players score goals, while goalie Ryan Blanchette made four saves on five shots.
    Katahdin 2, Schenck 2 (2 OT) — What appeared to be looking like a victory for Katahdin last Thursday turned into a deadlock game. Kolby Gallagher and Mickey Savage staked the Cougars to a 2-0 lead. Aaron Vienneau scored to close the gap and Aaron Erving’s goal with 5:27 left tied the game.
    Katahdin netkeeper Jesse McNally turned aside 16 of 22 shots.
    Houlton 2, Katahdin 0 — Last Tuesday in Stacyville, Garry Fowler’s two unassisted goals were the difference in the game. Goalie Tapley had five saves on seven shots, while Katahdin goalies McNally and Robert Mycroft combined to stop 15 of 27 shots faced.
Girls wrap up
    Bangor Christian 8, Katahdin 1 — On Saturday in Stacyville, the Patriots were too strong for the Lady Cougars, as Bangor Christian’s Demelza Ramirez scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. Katherine Bragg added two goals, while Meredith Bean, Whitney Holmes and Morgan Murray each had single tallies.

    The Patriots outshot Katahdin 27-10.
    Dani-Beth Cyr scored Katahdin’s only goal while goalie Makayla Patterson had  17 saves.
    East Grand 0, Shead 3 — On Saturday, the Tigers blanked visiting East Grand. Shead held a 34-5 shooting advantage, as East Grand’s goalie Kim Armstrong blocked 23 shots.
    East Grand 2, Wisdom 2 (2 OT) — Last Friday at home, the Lady Vikings led 2-0 behind Shaunna Beaudoin’s two unassisted goals. But, Shead came back scoring the neutralizer with 2:15 left, sending the game into the scoreless overtime periods.
    East Grand’s Armstrong made 14 saves on 16 shots.    Houlton 0, Fort Kent 3 – Taylor Boucher of Fort Kent scored twice and Katelyn Roy added another goal, as the Warriors defeated host Houlton last Friday.
    Houlton goalie Madison Lezotte set aside five of eight shots, while Fort Kent’s Carissa Pelletier had 17 saves on 22 shots.
    Katahdin 2, Schenck 5 — At Stacyville, the Lady Cougars couldn’t overtake the Wolverines.
    Katahdin’s goals were scored by Olivia McNally and Kali Rush, with Melissa Duffy picking up assists on both goals. Goalie Patterson blocked six of 11 shots.

    Houlton 6, Katahdin 2 — The Lady Shires used a hat trick by Abby Kinens to overtake Katahdin last Tuesday in Stacyville.
    Amanda Fogarty added a goal and two assists, while Vanessa Sandaerson and Chelsi Murray both grabbed a goal and assist in the win.
    Both of Katahdin’s goal were scored by Duffy.
    The Lady Shires outshot Katahdin 23-13, as Houlton’s goalies Lezotte and Marina Cameron combined to make nine saves, while Heather Cullen blocked nine shots.
