As part of Caribou’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, the Caribou Public Library was visited by the daughters of George Whitneck, a notable Caribou historian and author who donated his extensive collection of writings and journals to the public library in the 1960s. Whitneck’s collection included a 38-volume index of the Aroostook Republican from 1887-1948; original writings from his Civil War research, compiled into a book by the Caribou Historical Society entitled, “They Went From Caribou”, 31 novels; another book, “Pen Sketches,” featuring individuals from the area; and several articles regarding Civil War veterans. The local historian/author also assisted with a chronological history of Caribou for the Centennial Celebration booklet in 1959. Visiting the Caribou Public Library Director Diane Dubois were Whitneck’s daughters, Judy Fox of Bangor, left and Laurel Michaud of Massachusetts.
