Grades 5 and 6 girls NMCRA Tournament
The Fort Fairfield Lady Tigers scored a goal in each half and the defense was impenetrable as they prevailed against Presque Isle, 2-0, in the championship game of the 2009 NMCRA Girls Soccer Tournament. The midfield was busy for Presque Isle in the matchup, testing halfbacks Jessica Shaw and Elise Guerrette early and often. Fort Fairfield was able to break through on a Morgan Towle free kick midway through the first half.
The second half followed the script of the first with Shelby Shaw and Michaela Dube providing strong play in front of keeper Skyler McAtee. Fort Fairfield scored off a counterattack five minutes into the second half as Sara Beaulieu shot down the right side and squeaked the ball between McAtee and the goal post.
The Fort Fairfield defense withstood a late flurry of shots from Presque Isle to hang on for the win.
Presque Isle took on Easton in their first game of the day. PI picked up the 1-0 victory thanks to a Mandy Graham goal off a Grace Player assist. Shaye McHatten played solid defense at the stopper position for the Wildcats.
Fort Fairfield advanced to the championship game by knocking off Caribou in an instant classic. Regulation wasn’t enough time to decide a winner. Neither were two ‘Golden Goal’ overtime periods. The game went to a penalty kick shoot-out, which Fort Fairfield won, 4-1, to clinch their place in the finals.
