On Monday, Dec. 14, the Houlton Rotary hosted Chief of Staff to Senator Susan Collins, Steve Abbott, who spoke about the passing of the truck weights bill by the Senate and signed by President Obama within the coming days. This bill will allow trucks on our Maine interstate system to carry 100,000 pounds – up from the current weight restriction of 80,000 pounds. This is for a one-year time frame to see the impact it has on our roadways, safety and business economics. A study will be performed after one year to see if this way of transportation is feasible for permanent law. Abbott also spoke about health care reform and the financials that surround this subject.
