The Central Aroostook Panthers continued their fine Alpine ski season Saturday with victories in both the giant slalom and slalom races held at Bigrock in Mars Hill.
Shane Miller’s second-place finish led the way in the GS. His time for the two runs was 1:43.75. Josh Cook was fourth, Ethan Stiles sixth, Caleb Jewett eighth and Logan Brewer 10th for the Panthers, who defeated Fort Kent by two points. Caribou, Mattanawcook and Presque Isle also competed.
Adam Curtis came in 16th to lead the Wildcats.
In the slalom race, Jewett and Miller finished one-two, with times of 1:24.43 and 1:25.82, to lead CA to the triumph. Brewer took fifth and Stiles seventh for the winners.
On the girls’ side, Hallie Bartlett was ninth in the GS in 1:58.15 and she was 10th in the slalom in 1:50.35 to pace the Presque Isle girls, who came in fourth as a team in both events.
The CA boys also prevailed in both disciplines Jan. 18 at Bigrock. Miller, Jewett and Brewer were the three fastest skiers in the GS. Miller’s winning time was 1:22.99 for the two runs.
In the slalom, the Panthers had the top four, with Miller again in first in 1:15.44. Brewer was second, Stiles third and Cook fourth.
Jacob Towle of PI was 12th in the GS in 1:36.86 and Curtis led the Wildcats in the slalom by placing eighth in 1:27.17.
For girls, Hallie Bartlett led PI in the slalom with the 10th-place finish in 1:44.2. Emma Bartlett was 13th to pace PI in the GS in 1:53.23.
At Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent Jan. 16, Bartlett was fourth in the GS in 1:44.56.
In the boys GS, CA’s Jewett was fourth in 1:36.37, with Miller fifth in 1:36.37 and Brewer eighth in 1:37.41. Presque Isle’s Curtis was 13th in 1:40.51.
Emma Bartlett came in 12th in the slalom in 2:13.79 to pace the Wildcats.
The boys slalom saw Jewett come in third in 1:32.73. Also in the top 10 was Brewer of CA in seventh.
Local Nordic teams met in Caribou Friday for an under-the-lights classical-style 5K race.
The host Vikings were the team winners. Jonathan Rochester of Presque Isle had a solid performance, finishing ninth in the boys race in 16:28. Hallie Bartlett was fourth in the girls event in 19:10, while Fort Fairfield’s Melissa McKenney was seventh in 20:01 and teammate Veronica Plourde claimed the ninth spot in 20:19.
The Jan. 13 Nordic classic meet in Fort Kent saw Rochester leading PI by placing 15th in 19:39.8.
In the girls’ meet, Hallie Bartlett was fifth overall in 22:09.9 as the first PI skier, while McKenney was 11th in 23:14.5.
In another Nordic meet held recently – 3K classical and freestyle races held in Fort Kent – McKenney placed 11th in 9:51.1 to pace the Fort Fairfield girls. Presque Isle did not compete.
