LIMESTONE — Winter in northern Maine can be either enjoyed or hibernated through, and the Rotary Club of Limestone is encouraging everyone to come out and enjoy the season on Saturday, Feb. 13 during Fun Day. Even though temperatures are looking to reach the upper 20s for the event, there’ll be hot chicken stew warm enough to chase away any chill and plenty of snow-bound activities to ensure that even spectators work up an appetite. “This is a community event that everyone seems to be excited about,” said President of the Limestone Rotary Club Dottie Martin.
The Rotarians have received tremendous community support from organizations like the Limestone Snow Hawks, the Limestone Ski Club and various municipal departments including the Recreation Department, and having sought the entertainment expertise of Limestone Recreation Department Director Jamie Labreck, Fun Day will be filled with activities to keep kids and kids-at-heart warm in the winter weather; after all, you’re never too old to play a game of kickball in the snow.
More traditional activities offered during Fun Day include skiing and snowshoeing, but Labreck has put a spin on a few fan-favorites and will be providing an opportunity to play dodgeball in the snow as well as holding snowshoe races to see who can move the fastest while staying on two feet.
Fun Day is a great way to get some fresh air and reconnect with friends and family for a good cause; the Limestone Rotary Club will be raising money during the event for one of the many projects they support, ‘Sneakers for Students.’
Last fall, it was brought to the attention of Limestone Rotarians that some students at the Limestone Community School are without the proper footwear for gym class; since then, the Rotarians have been seeking new sneakers for students of all ages to have the equipment necessary for a positive physical education experience.
“Hopefully this event will accomplish at least two things:” Martin said, “it will raise funds for the ‘Sneakers for Students’ project and the town can see just how much they can accomplish by working together.”
