Easton boys claim titles

    Volleyball was the headline sport in the high school ranks last week, as tournaments were held in four locations around central Aroostook County to determine the top teams. 

    The larger schools battled last Wednesday, with the girls’ event held at Caribou High School and the boys’ at Presque Isle High School.
    At CHS, Presque Isle came away with the victory in the five-team field, which also included Caribou, Houlton, Madawaska and Fort Kent. The Wildcats, who were 9-1 during the round-robin portion, defeated the Owls in the final match, 25-14 and 25-21.
    Members of the winning team were Courtney Colligan, Naiomi Donovan, Rilee Elliott-Currie, Jolonna Gough, Amy Grivois, Alicia Kierstead, Elizabeth Kofstad, Alecia Palmer, Kelsey Park, Grace Short, Meredith Stewart, Jess Theriault and Bonnie Zeng. Alan Curtis was the team’s coach.
    Thirteen miles south, the boys’ tourney took place. Four teams entered, including the host Wildcats, Caribou, Houlton and Madawaska, and the Owls earned County bragging rights with 25-23, 27-25 wins over Presque Isle in the championship. Both PI and Madawaska had 7-2 records following the round-robin portion of the tourney.
    On the second-place PI squad, coached by Ron McAtee, were Nate Ackerson, Keenan Eaton, Logan Good, Chase Guerrette, Michael Guerrette, Andrew Kofstad, Andrew Legassie, Caleb Mathers, Ben McKenna, Zowa Nnazor, Trey Stewart, Logan Thibeau and Jacob Williams.
    The small schools held their tourneys later in the week, with Washburn hosting the girls’ competition Friday and Fort Fairfield the boys’ Saturday.
    In the girls’ tournament, host Washburn claimed the title by turning away second-place Fort Fairfield, 25-23 and 25-16 in the finals. The Beavers and Tigers both went 7-1 in pool play in the ‘B’ division, while Ashland went 7-1 to win pool ‘A.’
    In the semifinal round, Washburn beat Van Buren, 25-12, 23-25 and 25-10, while Fort Fairfield bested Ashland, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-14.
    Other schools participating were Wisdom, Easton, Katahdin, Limestone/MSSM, Central Aroostook and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
    Members of the victorious Washburn team, coached by Tammy Tatlock, were Rebecca Campbell, Sydney Beckwith, Meghan Saucier, Hillary Jackson, Amanda Libby, Melissa Cochran, Rayah Saucier, Maegan Fitzpatrick and Olivia Doody.
    For runners-up Fort Fairfield, team members were Brooke Beaulieu, Jessica Belanger, Emily Blaisdell, Courtney Churchill, Sydney Churchill, Autumn Coombs, Lindsay Graves, Amanda Hotham, Camille Huffman, Natika Jackson, Samantha Lewis, Stevie Lunney, Kellyn McGillan, Courtney Morgan, Keegan Watt, Jayana Williams and Kacie York. John McCrea was the coach of the Tigers.
    An all-star team was chosen for Division II, and it included Krystal Paradis of Wisdom, Ariana Babineau of Easton, Jenn Ouellette of Van Buren, Whitney Donovan of Ashland, Heather Cullen of Katahdin, Rebecca Campbell of Washburn, Hattie Welsh of Limestone/MSSM, Courtney Churchill of Fort Fairfield, Kristen Long of Central Aroostook and Emily Little of GHCA.
    In Saturday’s boys’ tournament, Easton downed Van Buren in the finals, 25-13 and 25-15, to take top honors.
    Easton went 7-2 to win pool B, while GHCA went 7-1 in pool A. However, GHCA was knocked off by Van Buren in the semifinals, 25-18 and 25-18. The Bears won their semifinal over Fort Fairfield, 25-10, 23-25 and 25-21.
    Also playing in the tourney were Washburn, Wisdom, Limestone/MSSM, Ashland and Central Aroostook.
    The Bears’ roster included Corey White, Holden Turner, Luke Budreau, Carl Mullen, Jacob Bacon, Tyler Gaudier, Jonah Bacon, Zach Clark, Luke Fuller, Reid Clark and Cody Tompkins. Brent Mosher was Easton’s coach.
    The all-tournament team included Lucas Hafford of Ashland, Jeff Devoe of Central Aroostook, Holden Turner of Easton, Josh Churchill of Fort Fairfield, Chad Duff of GHCA, Ty Tracy of Limestone/MSSM, Jordan Banks of Van Buren, Jordan McLaughlin of Washburn and Andrew Malenica of Wisdom.
    Easton’s Corey White was named tourney MVP.
