ASHLAND – On March 13 in the Bobby Goding Memorial Gymnasium, former students gathered at Ashland Community High School to renew old friendships and play basketball in their gym for the last time.     Bill Nemer and Ron Grover, both past varsity basketball coaches, organized and directed this event that brought a total of 189 past basketball players, cheerleaders, majorettes and band members to their beloved “Hive.”
The communities that comprise MSAD 32 came out in full force, with an approximate crowd of 500 on hand, to celebrate and give their support to these men and women that brought them many wonderful memories dating back to the 1940s.
As they walked into the gymnasium, Olympic style, holding their orange paper that indicated the year they graduated, the spectators stood on their feet and greeted them with tremendous cheers as they have been doing for the past six decades, creating an emotional memory that everyone in attendance will never forget. The band, led by Jon Simonoff, played their signature songs of “Smoke on the Water” for the men and “Shadows of the Night” for the women, which got the athletes and fans pumped up for a great time.
Ninety five former basketball players took to the floor to play six-minute games, alternating between men and women. There were enough players for five games each, with one ladies team playing twice. Serving as officials were Lynwood McHatten, Mike Cote, Karen Cyr Richter and Peter Belskis.
“We’re thankful for everybody who participated, especially the fans, who are the best a community can have,” Grover said. “They continue to support our young people not only in education, but in all our extra-curricular activities.”
Randy Caron, president of the alumni association, reported that $830 was collected for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Alumni who have not received a recent mailing from the alumni association are urged to contact Caron at rkcaron@ainop.com or by telephone at 435-6015.
