GOOD CITIZENS — The 1985 Houlton Junior High awards assembly was held with Gregory Haggerty and Courtney Willigar receiving the Good Citizenship awards.
Local interest — The big steam-roller got mired on Park Street opposite the house of Arthur McCready. The machine weighs 13 tons and so deeply was it embedded in the mud that it was helpless until George Taber hooked his new five-ton Gasoline Traction Engine onto it and walked away with the helpless machine with scarcely an effort.

Cornerstone — The Christian and Missionary Alliance officially laid the cornerstone of their new church at the corner of Pleasant Street and Highland Avenue.
Rare record — The L.G. Boutilier family of Carys Mills claims a record of perfect attendance at school that any family would be proud of. Since moving to Houlton in 1926 their aggregate perfect attendance without being absent or tardy during a year in the Houlton schools has been 27 years. Four of the daughters had to walk two miles to school many of those years before the school bus was started.
Houlton girl — From the Beverly Times, Beverly, Mass. Miss Harrigan, who is a former Houlton girl, having moved from here with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John C. Harrigan about 20 years ago is a popular and successful violin teacher having classes in Salem, Beverly and Ipswich; and her classes are frequently heard in broadcasts over Boston stations.
North Road — The pupils of the Henderson School and Carson School with teachers Audrey Hutchinson and Helen Sweet enjoyed a picnic in a field and spent the remainder of the day at Cary Lake to mark the end of the school year.

State office — Donald Edwards assumed presidency of the Maine State Elks Association.
Free gifts — Over $1,000 in free gifts will rain on Houlton. Local merchants have contributed merchandise certificates and they will be dropped from an airplane over the community.
Dedication — The largest gathering of Roman Catholic clergy will be in Houlton when the Most Rev. David J. Feeney, D.D. Bishop of Portland will officiate at the dedication of the new church and preside at the Solemn High Mass of St. Mary’s of the Visitation.
Bridal shower — Miss Vicky Duplichen entertained several friends Saturday evening at a barbecue followed by a pre-nuptial shower honoring Miss Ann Caldwell. Friends present were the Misses Carol Dunlap, Elizabeth Gibson, Linda Lovely, Clara Niles, Cobina Hannigan, Barbara McGillicuddy, Elizabeth Peltier, Linda Dickison, Joyce Vail and Mary Roach.
Monticello — Baseball awards were presented to the following at the Monticello Grammar School graduation exercises: Ronnie Carter, Lynn Foster, Dwight Mills, Jack Wilde, Leslie Faulkner, Paul Francis, Milton Burtt, Larry Faulkner, Halston Britton, Gary Flewelling, Gary Sewell, Dennis Codrey, Allan Paul, Lloyd Paul, Michael Mills and Kirk Folsom.

Houlton — Ninety-nine seniors at Houlton High School received their diplomas this past week. Commencement speaker was Judge James P. Archibald, active retired member of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and a Houlton native son.
County Champs — The Houlton Junior High boys’ baseball team defeated Caribou to win the Aroostook County title.
To retire — Eva McCain, former teacher and currently a tutor will retire at the end of this school year with 25 years in the classroom. The school staff presented one red rose to her each day of her last week of school.
Father of the year — Father’s Day was observed at the United Baptist Church in Littleton with Hartley Henderson being chosen as “Father of the Year.”
