Samuel Bacon, of Easton, has been recognized for superior academic and leadership potential by the United States Coast Guard Academy. Sam, a 2009 graduate of Easton High School, accepted an appointment to attend the Coast Guard Academy and was sworn in as a member of the Class of 2014 on June 28.

Recognized as one of the best engineering schools in the country, the United States Coast Guard Academy is a fully-accredited college educating future Coast Guard officers. The smallest of our nation’s five military service academies, the Coast Guard Academy’s Corps of Cadets represents the nation’s best and brightest students, ready to serve and lead their country. Admission to the Coast Guard Academy is extremely competitive. The entering Class of 2014 is comprised of 290 appointees chosen from a pool of approximately 4,500 applicants. Selection criteria are stringent and consist of several factors including academic performance, athletic performance, demonstrated leadership potential and community involvement.
Initially referred to as “Swabs,” the incoming appointees cannot lay claim to the designation of “Cadet” until completing an intense seven-week military training period known as “Swab Summer” in which they will be pushed to their physical, mental and emotional limits. Sam’s Swab Summer will culminate with a five-day training voyage on the Coast Guard Academy’s Cutter Eagle. Known as “America’s Tall Ship,” the Cutter Eagle is the only square rigger sailing ship in the U.S. active duty forces.
After completing Swab Summer, Sam will begin his academic pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. All cadets receive a full tuition scholarship and monthly stipend for a five-year service commitment to the Coast Guard upon graduation. All graduates are guaranteed a position of leadership as a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard.
Sam graduated from Easton High School in 2009 with a GPA of 3.85 and attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle for one year, earning a place on the dean’s list with a GPA of 3.95. He was a member of the National Honor Society and served one year as president of the State of Maine NHS Chapter. In addition to being a four-year high school varsity player in both soccer and basketball, Sam earned a place on the varsity teams in both sports at the college level. Sam participated in several theatrical productions at Easton High School, winning the school’s Junior Exhibition and receiving an individual award for outstanding performance at the Northern Maine Regional One-Act Play competition. Sam has held numerous leadership positions including serving for three years as class president. He was an active member of the Easton Fire Department.
Sam is the son of Randy and Paula Bacon and grandson of Gary and JoAnn Bacon of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Philip and Madeline Jalbert of St. John, Maine.
