Soccer round-up

    In Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department youth soccer action last week, the Clash opened Tuesday’s slate with a 2-0 win over the Mutiny in grades 5-6 action. Ryle Mortland scored both goals, one assisted by Jordan Bonville. Gavin Kelley and Madison Bearden both had strong outings for the Mutiny in a losing cause. 

    The Sting claimed a 3-1 victory over the Crew, with Randon Mortland picking up the hat trick. Jack Beaulieu had two assists and R.J. Gross the other for the Sting. Denny Young notched an unassisted goal, Grant Stewart was a standout at keeper and Emily Wheaton turned in a strong performance for the Crew.
    The Rapids blanked the Express, 3-0, behind Griffen Guerrette’s three-goal game. David Kofstad spearheaded the Rapids’ defense, while Tyler Levesque, Maxx Langille and Brittany Warner were all outstanding for the Express.
    The Blast and the Missiles opened grades 3-4 play last Wednesday, with the two teams battling to a 2-2 deadlock. Rolen Mortland scored twice for the Blast, while Will Bridges, Cole Paterson and Chase Quirion played strong defensively to keep the Missiles off the scoreboard in the first half. Zech Morse and Alex Harvath came through with second-half goals as the Missiles battled back to tie the game. Thomas Patenaude pitched a shutout in goal over the final 20 minutes for the Missiles.
    Game two that day saw the Drillers get past the Sounders, 3-1. Jake Stevens had all three Drillers’ goals and teammate Jacob Bonville was solid between the pipes, while Caleb Wheaton continued his torrid scoring pace by tallying for the Sounders. Carter Rice and Jonah Hudson had strong outings in the loss.
    The nightcap was a girls’ contest and the Tornados bested the Hurricane, 3-1. Amelia Theriault had all three goals for the winners, while Libby Moreau scored and Sophia Lambert turned in a strong all-around game for the ’Canes.
    On Thursday, in another girls’ grades 3-4 battle, the Galaxy stopped the Blizzard, 3-1. Savannah Rodriquez found the back of the net three times to lead the charge for the Galaxy, while Taylor Hedrich and Rebecca Rider also played well. For the Blizzard, Kaci Bates starred on defense and also scored her team’s lone goal. Eleanor St. Peter also played well and showed strong leadership in the defeat.
    The second game Thursday saw the Sting come away with a 3-0 shutout win over the Mutiny as play reverted back to the grades 5-6 co-ed league. Randon Mortland scored all three goals and Adam Paterson had the shutout as the team’s keeper. Gavin Kelley and Pat Cash played well for the Mutiny in the loss.
    Denny Young converted an Emily Wheaton assist for the lone goal in the Crew’s 1-0 win over the Rapids. Grant Stewart had the shutout in goal. David Kofstad and Griffen Guerrette had stellar games for the Rapids.
    The Clash downed the Express, 3-1, behind Ryle Mortland’s three goals. Caleb Page, Casey Lovely and Colin Daigle were other key players in the win. Alex Brewer scored for the Express and teammates Wyatt Kennedy, Brooke McLean and Haley St. Thomas also had excellent showings.

Basketball registration

    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has set registration dates for the winter basketball program.
    Registration for grades 1 and 2 began Sept. 22 and the program gets under way Oct. 12.
    All registrations are accepted at the recreation center office from 8 a.m.-5  p.m. Monday through Friday.  For more information, call 764-2545.
