Mapleton’s Perry returns home from ‘Idol’ audition

 MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

In August, Rebeckah (Gallant) Perry, formerly of Mapleton, won a trip to California to audition for the FOX hit show, “American Idol.” After catching up with Perry following her return to Maine, she shared with me that California “was wonderful, we (her husband, Michael, traveled with her) really loved it. Even though it’s busy and full of people, the atmosphere was very relaxed and comfortable. We were so blessed to have had such a cool experience for our anniversary!”

In spite of doing her best, Perry did not make the next round of auditions. However, since returning to her home in Bangor, her schedule hasn’t slowed down any since returning from California. She recently completed an audition at an “invite-only” event for the Boston Bruins and has a similar audition next week for the Boston Celtics. Perry has also been put on the call sheet for the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers. Still somewhat amazed at her recent experiences, she says it all is “so bizarre, but awesome!”
Perry is the daughter of Stephen and June Gallant of Mapleton.

Haystack Historical Society news

The Haystack Historical Society held its annual supper and auction Sept. 11. Organizers deemed their famous baked ham and baked bean supper a big success. One hundred-fifty meals were served and the comments received were all positive! No one left hungry! The auction was well attended; those that attended had a great time and were very generous. The historical society wishes to thank all for supporting their primary fundraiser.
If any teacher would like to bring their class to the museum for a field trip, they are encouraged to call President Diane Pratt at 764-6085 or Secretary Myrna Gardner at 764-0290 to make arrangements.
The Haystack Historical Society is always looking for new members. If you are interested in becoming a member, please consider attending their next meeting Monday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at the museum.

Girl Scout fundraiser

Most of you are familiar with the annual Girl Scout cookie sale that takes place in January, but did you know that Girl Scouts also participate in a fall fundraiser?
For the next few weeks, area Girl Scouts will be taking orders for nuts, candy, and magazine subscriptions. Not only do the troops that participate earn money for each item sold, but the girls also have an opportunity to earn patches and incentive prizes.
If a Girl Scout approaches you to place an order, please consider supporting your local troops!

Free quilting classes

Are you looking to start a new sewing project, but have run out of ideas? Would you like to have an opportunity to spend some time with friends, or meet new ones all while making a quilt? Gloria Wilcox will be starting a series of free quilting classes for senior citizens starting today, Sept. 29. Classes will be held on Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m.-noon at the Lions Hall. Space is limited, so please contact Gloria at 764-6794 for more information and to reserve your spot.

Museum artifacts

The Haystack Historical Society is in the process of developing the cloakrooms, more commonly known as coatrooms, at the School Museum.
The Society is looking specifically for book bags, lunch pails, boots, jackets, hats or any items found in a school cloakroom from the late 1800s through the early 1900s when the school was in operation. If you have any of these interesting items and would like to donate them to the museum, please contact Secretary Myrna Gardner at 764-0290 or leave a message at the Haystack Historical Society at 764-4111.
