PRESQUE ISLE — The Ashland Hornets have used a pair of wins over a perennial Eastern Maine power to move into first place in the Class D girls soccer Heal Point standings.

Last Wednesday at the Johnson Athletic Complex, Ashland defeated the Southern Aroostook Warriors for the second time in a week. The final score was 3-1, with freshman Rachel Gillis converting a pair of goals off assists by sophomore Kayla Cote to lead the offense.
“The win down there gave us motivation,” said Ashland coach Peter Belskis. “We tightened up a few things for our home game. It was another big win for us.”
Ashland scored first when Brooke LaBelle scored off a header by stopper back Whitney Donovan following a corner kick.
“Whitney has really been our best player,” Belskis said. “She covers the opponents’ top weapon and she has a knack for heading the ball and doing it with a purpose.”
The Gillis-Cote combination made it 2-0 early in the second half before SA’s Jasmine Rockwell got her team on the board minutes later.
“We have a tendency to relax with the lead and that is something we need to work on,” Belskis said.
However, in the 14th minute, Gillis scored her second of the game and third of the season to secure Ashland’s sixth victory against just two losses.
