Fundraiser to help send

Mapleton students to Youth 2011

MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

Local students planning to attend Youth 2011 are hosting two family photo days (one in Mapleton and one in Washburn). Photographers will schedule 15-minute photo sessions. Unedited photos will be given to you that day on a CD. Photos can then be used to make Christmas gifts, cards and prints. The cost will be $25 for a 15-minute session and will include dozens of pictures. All money raised will help send the kids to Youth 2011 next summer.

Youth 2011 is the national youth gathering for the United Methodist Church. It is an event that only happens every four years and is the largest single gathering of UMC youth in existence. This four-day conference will bring together top United Methodist leaders, as well as the best ecumenical speakers, bands and talent with thousands of youth from all around the nation.

Call Torry Eaton at 764-3762 (or e-mail meaton@mfx.net) to schedule your session in Mapleton at the Mapleton United Methodist Church this Sunday, Dec. 5 beginning at noon.

Tree raffle

The Mapleton Ladies Extension met at the Lions Hall Nov. 8 with seven members attending. We all brought in items for our Primitive Country Christmas Tree that will be raffled off. The items include a 5-foot tree with a real wood core, a wooden sleigh decoration, a Christmas book, a sleigh ride from Putnam’s in Mapleton, $10 gift certificates from The Mapleton Restaurant (2), The Pizza House, and Graves’ Shop ‘N Save, a homemade log cabin-style quilted tree skirt, many tree decorations and much more.

THE MAPLETON LADIES EXTENSION is selling raffle tickets for a Primitive Country Christmas Tree. Items include a 5-foot tree, decorations and gift certificates. For more information, call Liz Brewer at 764-3427 during the evenings or see any other Extension member. The drawing will be Dec. 10. Proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets will be donated to the Central Aroostook Humane Society.

The group voted to donate all proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets to the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle. After tallying up all items to be raffled off, the tree and items are valued at an estimated $300. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets can call Liz Brewer at 764-3427 during the evenings to make arrangements, or any of the Extension members. The drawing will be Dec. 10.

The Ladies also met Nov. 23 and assembled Thanksgiving baskets for four elderly people in our community. After assembling the boxes, which consisted of some traditional Thanksgiving meal items, decorations and lots of love, they were delivered and Extension members visited with each recipient.

If interested in becoming a member, please feel free to contact any of our members to get information on our next meeting time and location. We normally meet the second Monday night of each month.

Cookies and Carols

Everyone is invited to the United Baptist Church of Mapleton this Sunday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. for Cookies and Carols. Please bring two dozen Christmas cookies to share. Plan now to enjoy a time of singing Christmas carols and refreshments. Punch and coffee will be provided. The church is on Main Street across from the Mapleton Elementary School and is handicapped accessible.

Childcare for Christmas shopping

Local students planning to attend Youth 2011 are hosting two Christmas shoppers’ childcare evenings (one in Mapleton and one in Washburn). We will watch your child(ren) in Mapleton and Washburn so that you can go do your last-minute Christmas shopping (maybe even dinner out)! We will provide supper, crafts and entertainment. Adult supervision will be provided. All we ask for is a donation for our trip to Youth 2011!

All money raised will help send the kids to Youth 2011 next summer. Youth 2011 is the national youth gathering for the United Methodist Church.
