WASHBURN NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

My name is Tomi (Griffin) Henderson and I will be doing the Washburn News column for awhile. I am trying to step into some big shoes left by Christie, but will be relying mainly on getting news either by phone (429-9126) or e-mail (tomihen@yahoo.com).

I will try to get to Washburn occasionally, but won’t be able to cover all the events that Christie has done over the years. Please contact me with any items that you think are newsworthy.

A little history: my dad was Thomas Griffin, son of Thomas and Ruth Griffin of Washburn. Art and Stacy Griffin are my first cousins – although please don’t hold that against me!! I live in Mars Hill and have done the Mars Hill News column for a number of years.

Weigh-in starts each Monday at 4:45 p.m. and goes until 5:25 p.m. Meetings start at 5:30 p.m. at the Washburn Snowmobile Club.

Destination Imagination

The WDHS Destination Imagination (DI) teams won first place in each of their categories in the regional and state competitions. The Jurassic Pork Team won a special Divinci Award for outstanding creativity and adventurous risk to reach truly new and unique destinations. Cameron and Kyle Huston each won a State Destination Imagination Scholarship. These teams showed exemplary talent and abilities to problem solve.

They will be fund-raising for the Global “world” competition in Knoxville, Tenn., which will be held the week of May 24-29. These teams have been working hard all year to raise funds in preparation for this trip in the event that they were to win. They now need to raise another $13,000 in the next five weeks. Please support these students in attaining their goal of attending this competition. If anyone would like to have the team members do odd jobs or to donate items for an upcoming auction, bottles for their bottle drive or a tax-deductible monetary donation, contact their advisor, Tracy Reed, at 455-4501 (work) or 455-4886 (home) or e-mail her at treed@msad45.net.

Fundraiser

The Washburn August Festival and the 150th Anniversary Committee will be holding a fund-raising supper at the Washburn Trail Runners clubhouse on Saturday, April 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu will include the typical Saturday night beans and hotdogs meal, with salads, rolls and dessert. Cost is $5 per person. Proceeds will go toward this year’s celebration on Aug. 19-21.
