What Students Say

“If you could design your own vehicle, what special features would it have?”

Scott Mitchell Johnson
Talked to eighth-graders at Presque Isle Middle School

Macy Desmond

KS-MACY DESMOND-DC-SH-14

Age: 14
Teacher: Scott Young

“I’d probably have it run on something different than gas because of all the pollution in the air … it’s just crazy. Plus, gas prices are too high. I play a lot of sports and I live in Mapleton, so it’s nine miles out, nine miles back every day. That adds up quick when gas is so expensive.”

Mason Raymond

KS-MASON RAYMOND-DC-SH-14

Age: 13
Teacher: Bill Guerrette

“It would probably be a three-quarter ton pickup with heated leather, DVD players,XM radio, and all loaded, but it would get really good gas mileage … like 25 miles to the gallon. It would probably have really nice alloy rims and nice tires,
and it would be four-door and tan.”

Samantha Plummer-Morgan

KS-SAMANTHA PLUMMER MORGAN-DC-SH-14

Age: 14
Teacher: Julie Gardner

“All my family members live in different cities and states, so we travel a lot. With the high gas prices, it’s harder for us to pay. I’d design a vehicle that would run on something more affordable than gas. I’d also want the vehicle to have surround sound so I can listen to my hiphop music.”

Austin Thibeau

KS-AUSTIN THIBEAU-DC-SH-14

Age: 14
Teacher: Lisa Dow

“It would probably be one of those electric cars, but it also has a gas tank, too. I’d use the gas as a backup. It would be more affordable that way. I’d also make it so it wouldn’t have as much wind resistance so it would be aerodynamic and go faster.”

Amanda Palmer

KS-AMANDA PALMER-DC-SH-14

Age: 14
Teacher: Tim Olore

“You wouldn’t have to put gas in it. It would use something else; there’s a lot of water in the world, like lakes and rivers,
so I’d have it run on water. I’d also have the outside of the car have some kind of protective covering so if you got in an accident and crashed into something, it wouldn’t damage the car.”

Keeghan Lowe

KS-KEEGHAN LOWE-DC-SH-14

Age: 14
Teacher: Scott Young

“It would be low on gas mileage and probably be safer. It would be solar powered but could still run on gas. I’d have air bags all around the car, that way everybody would be safer in case you got into an accident.”
