PRESQUE ISLE — During a President’s Reception held on March 31, 19 students at the University of Maine at Presque Isle received grant awards through the Student Support Services Program. Each full-time-student award was approximately $600 and will assist the students by reducing their loans.
On Dec.15, 2000, Section 17 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 was amended to provide grant aid for eligible TRIO Student Support Services Program (SSS) students. The respective college/university SSS Program selects the recipients and awards the grant money to eligible freshman and sophomore college students who are active participants, have successfully completed at least one semester and are receiving Federal Pell Grants.
This is the 10th year, since the passing of this act, that the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s SSS Program has been funded to provide its participants with grant aid. A total of $12,000 was awarded. Mary Kate Barbosa, director of TRIO Student Support Services, and Chris Bell, director of Financial Aid, worked together to make the selections.
The following students received funding: Abdigani Ashkir, Portland; Joey Bard, Woodland; Doree Bell, Naples; Lisa Bruso, Caribou; James Clark, Courtney Cray, John Ireland, Rashell Saucier, Gregory Thompson and Dustin Cray, all of Presque Isle; Kaci Hudson, Windsor; Miranda Cobb, Clinton; Jasmine Cote, Limestone; Mackenzie Flannery, Smyrna; Dylan Markie, Mattawamkeag; Elissa McNeil, Dover-Foxcroft; Sarah Pickering-Ames, Blue Hill; Angela Williams, Fort Fairfield; and Isaac Robertson, Hood County, Texas.
