Three 2011 recipients of the Richard Steele Scholarship are from northern Aroostook County high schools and will receive full scholarships to attend the Exploration Senior Program on the campus of Yale University for three weeks in July and August, as announced by Moira Kelly, executive director and president of Exploration Summer Programs on April 8.
According to Kelly, the scholarship provides individualized college counseling beginning upon the students’ return to high school in the fall and continuing through their acceptance to college.
Selected as 2011 Richard Steele Scholars are freshmen Esther Winslow of Van Buren District Secondary School, Elyse Kiehn of Caribou High School, and Christopher Probst of Fort Kent Community High School.
The scholarship was established to honor Richard “Dick” Steele for his great support of Exploration Summer Programs and his tremendous contributions to the field of college and university admissions.
As an Exploration trustee, Steele was instrumental in assisting with the development of the Northern Maine Scholarship Program, with a focus on northern Aroostook County. After his death in the spring of 2010, the program was renamed the Richard Steele Scholarship Program in his honor.
