100 Years Ago-June 7, 1911
Aroostook Times

    Local — Burnham Bell and John Adams, on a fishing trip in Littleton picked one-half pint of ripe field strawberries, which is some record for good old Aroostook County.
    Linneus — The Ladies Aid Society held an Ice Cream Supper Saturday evening in French’s Hall. Net proceeds of $12 were collected for the benefit of the church.
    Houlton — W.F. Buzzell has recently added to his business an automobile truck for delivering furniture etc. It is the first one to be used in Aroostook County and will be a valuable addition to his equipment.

    Highway campaign — The campaign to improve highways leading into and through Aroostook County, started by this newspaper about a month ago and sponsored by the citizens and various organizations in Houlton has gained new momentum and is expected to sweep into every corner of the county.

bs-fromfiles30-dc-pt-231930 HHS BAND — The 1930 Houlton High School band was comprised of 27 young men according to the annual yearbook, The North Star. Members of the band were: coronets, Cecil Bradley, Robert Hoskins, George Harrison and Donald Nelder; clarinets, Herman Young, Leonard Crockett, Norman Wood and Britton Moir; saxophones, Paul Hazlett, Alston Conlogue, Colby McIntyre and Robert Gilpatrick; bass, Harold Young and Jack Towers; baritone, Halson Gerow; alto, Harold Robbins, Lloyd Perrigo, James Robinson, Harold Chase and James Seamons; trombones, Gerald Kelso, Edward Cotton and Maurice Nelder; and drums, Roderick Clark, David Rideout, Floyd Haskell and Donald Roberts. Eva Miller, center, was the director. There were five members not pictured.

    Littleton — The following pupils from the Henderson School have received seven-point pins and certificates: Arnold Miller, Phyllis and Donald Adams, Joyce, Allison, Loline and Marguerite Henderson. Arnold Miller has not been absent or tardy during the year. He also received 100 percent in Spelling during the year.
    Winner — The speaking contest sponsored by the local union W.C.T.U. was held at Military Street Baptist Church. Miss Crete Lambert won first place in the opinion of the judges, receiving the silver medal. Miss Lambert will be eligible to compete in the state contest to be held here in the fall.   
50 Years Ago- June 8, 1961

    Graduates — Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Rhoda were in Kents Hill over the weekend where on Sunday they attended the graduation of their son, Richard from Kents Hill Preparatory School.
    Ludlow — The Moosebrook School closed May 31 for the summer. The teacher, Mrs. Eva McCain presented prizes for perfect attendance; Grade Three, Joseph Bishop, Barbara Kenney and Jean Benson; Grade Two, Tony Ivey and Bruce Warman; Grade One, Brian Carpenter. Millard Wright and Rhonda Warman were only absent one-half day and also received prizes.
    Houlton — Donald P. Woods, son of Mrs. Addie Wood and the late James A. Woods received his D.D.S. at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is also a graduate of Houlton High School and Higgins Preparatory School. He received his four years of pre-med at Mount Allison University.

    Town manager — Lewis Bone of Hampden has accepted the position of Town Manager of Houlton.
    National pageant — Maine’s Junior Miss, Mary Alice Inman of Houlton will be leaving for Mobile, Alabama to participate as the State of Maine representative.
    A.A.U.W. — Miss Mary Jane Safran of Houlton High School has been named the recipient of the American Association of University Women’s Award. It is in the amount of $500 and is based on outstanding academic achievement and leadership.
    Hospital merger — Houlton Regional Hospital moved into the current facility on Hartford Street on June 5, 1976. The hospital will be celebrating its 10th year anniversary with a variety of events.
    Retirement — Capt. Dean Clukey of the Maine State Police was an honored guest at the Parkview Terrace following the announcement of his retirement.
