LIMESTONE — While many are reluctant to think about the end of summer, the thoughts of Limestone’s Rotarians have already shifted to fall as they’ve been thinking of ways to help youths have a successful school year.

Members of the Limestone Rotary Club officially kicked off their annual Backpack Project by placing the first receptacle at Mike’s Family Market in Limestone. Participants included, front row, from left: Limestone Rotary Club President David King, Pat Zenzius and Dottie Martin, fellow Rotarians. Back row: Rotarians Mike Lambert and Mike Cyr, owner of Mike’s Family Market.

After their last meeting on July 28, the group began implementing their Backpack Project for the Limestone-Caswell area to collect new and gently used backpacks which will, in turn, be donated to local students who otherwise wouldn’t be receiving a new backpack this fall.

This is the second year that the group has helped students head back to school and the Rotarians are hoping for another great community response to the program, which yielded 70 donated backpacks last fall.

The programs success was measured by the number of students who’s faces lit-up with excitement when they received their new bags.

The Limestone Rotary Backpack Project will run through August; new and gently used backpacks can be placed into the marked cardboard receptacles at Mike’s Family Market, AL-BEAR’S, Hometown One-Stop, Katahdin Bank in Limestone, the Maine School of Science and Mathematics as well as the Robert A. Frost Memorial Library.
