The much anticipated 22nd edition of the County Open Golf Tournament is this weekend with a different format.
Houlton Community Golf Course will host Friday’s individual 18-hole tournament, with both gross and net prizes. These prizes, incidentally, are the most generous of any tournament in the state. Saturday, VaJoWa Golf Course in Island Falls will join the event with a four-man team scramble.
Saturday night, the highlight social with dinner and entertainment will be held under the tent at Houlton Community Golf Course.
The County Open and its sponsors have raised more than $485,000 for the benefit of the Houlton Regional Health Services Foundation, and fully deserve all of our support for this great cause.
There is still time to enter by calling the Houlton or Island Falls golf clubs. See you there.
Men’s Twilight League play has reached the critical part with only one week remaining on the regular schedule, and several teams are on the bubble to reach the playoffs.
Mike Fleming/Steve Henderson, Bill Marciniak/Malcolm Mersereau, Zach Goodwin/Aaron Peabody, Tony Marino/Andy Peabody, Wayne Belyea/Mike Kelly, Gabe Goodwin/Dan Peabody, Peter Madore/Nick Skehan and Ian Gervais/Porter Gervais all seem to have a lock to get in with many of the other teams very close. It should be a fun week.
Rain forced cancellation of last week’s Twilight League play. But, the gals refused to go home and cook dinner. So, out came the playing cards.
On Aug. 6, Aroostook Valley Country Club held a scramble and auction to benefit the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame, which is in its formation. The basketball Hall of Fame is headed by Houlton native, Peter Webb and basketball great Skip Chappell.
Paul Adams, Dick and Jerry York and I enjoyed every minute as we finished tied for second with a 13 under par gross. Houlton was also represented with a team of Frank Dunn, Bert Daniels, Jerry Adams and Art Nickel. Please don’t ask their score, but they also enjoyed the camaraderie.
Again, if possible, enter the County Open this weekend you’ll enjoy it.
