Presque Isle police intervened to stop a threatened suicide on Friday.

The Presque Isle Police Department received a call at about 5:20 p.m. that an armed man was threatening to take his own life, city Public Information Officer Kim Smith said.

Safety personnel evacuated the area as a precaution, according to Police Chief Chris Hayes.

Staff with the Presque Isle department and the Houlton Regional Communications Center worked with the man for approximately an hour. The man eventually dropped the firearm, Hayes said.

Police placed him in protective custody. No one was injured.

The department will not release information about the man’s identity, health or personal circumstances out of respect for his privacy, the chief said.

There is no threat to the public, Smith said.
