Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
What a beautiful week for sunshine this past week. We had some rain but not enough to spoil plans. Veggies are plentiful in the garden – cukes, carrots, corn, tomatoes, and all that good stuff. And doesn’t it taste good. Thanks to the person who left cucumbers here recently. Betty Britton returned home from Houlton Regional Hospital.
Joyce Miller had a quick trip to the emergency room at the hospital, but she is home and doing well. Shirley Nason’s sister Ruth has returned to her home in Florida after a visit with Shirley and other family members.
It rained Thursday night but the band played on. That is the community band, McGill’s at the park on Thursday. Paul and Jeannie Armstrong attended the beanhole bean supper and parade on Saturday out of town and reported they had a great time. Paul has recently had eye surgery.
The summer is moving right along. The next big holiday is Labor Day. Have you made your plans? Violetta Paul, widow of Dr. Paul, was in town recently with her husband David. Violette married recently and they were here for several days visiting friends. Welcome home, Violetta.
A statement about angels—I left my home in heaven to come to earth below, but I wasn’t left alone here; God sent angels to guide me home.
Bible verse: “Thus says the Lord: observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed.” (Isaiah 56:1) Have a safe and healthy week.

Island Falls News
Paula Chamberlain and her mother, Pauline Robbins, have arrived from their home in Virginia to spend two weeks in the area, a week at the Chamberlain cottage on Mattawam-keag Lake and a week at Vacationland Estates. While here they plan to visit with relatives and tour the county, while husband and son-in-law, Alan Chamberlain, enjoys the fishing and swimming at the lake.
Phyllis Jenkins of Concord, N.H. and Maurine Hannaford, Kennebunkport, have been recent guests of their sister and aunt, Riva Hawkes. While here they had a good time taking in some of the Summerfest activities, such as the pow-wow held on the grounds behind the VFW building. This was very interesting and if successful it may be repeated next year. They also enjoyed the VFW chicken barbecue held on the last day of the Summerfest and the parade that followed. For the last few days of the Summerfest there were many people, former residents, here and it was fun to see them again and renew acquaintenances. Carlette (Pettengill) Nevers of Hanover, N.H. was here along with her daughter, who now lives in Los Angeles. Joyce and Diane Curry of Portland, were here and Diane had a good ride  on one of the floats in the parade.
Running the races on Saturday was Sam Sewall’s great-granddaughter Marie Connelly, and she won a prize in her age division. Alan Chamberlain also won a prize for his age division and Gail (Webb) Davis also won in her age division. It’s nice when someone you know wins.
I still have the six big crows landing in my back fields every day. Glad I don’t have a garden that they can plunder. I did shoo one out of my blueberry bush once. I am putting just a few sunflower seeds out for my chickadees and gold finch. I don’t want to attract those big gray squirrels. Still no deer but come fall when the apples are ready am hoping they will show up.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly ME 0233, HOULTON
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, Aug. 12, meeting. Sixteen ladies attended including three KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly).
Leader Denise Clark was present and led the meeting. The skinny dish was taken home by Joyce Estey. Loser of the week was Charlotte Marley. Some of the meeting was taken up with discussion of the fall rally to be in Presque Isle in October.
Denise talked about high blood pressure, hypertension, as it is commonly called. It is a silent killer, as there are no symptoms. Everyone was asked how they felt when the doctor told her she had high blood pressure. Each one gave a different reaction. The next meeting will be August 19 at the same location.
If you need more information about the chapter, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653.
Every Friday our meeting is held at 9 a.m., after weigh in at 8-8:45 a.m. There is no weigh-ins after this time, to give the ladies time to figure their reports. See you next week.
