Pet Talk

Editor’s Note: Pet Talk will occasionally feature an animal that is available for adoption at the Houlton Humane Society.
The little kitty that we are featuring this week is Annie. Annie is about three years old and she came into the shelter the 19th of September with two little baby kittens. Her boys have been adopted, but Annie is still with us, all spayed and ready for a new home. Annie’s adoption fee is $50 to cover the cost of her spay surgery, shots, and wormer. Annie is a beautiful kitty, but very quiet. She would like a peaceful home where she can nap from the comfort of a high place or a warm corner. She probably won’t be a lap cat right away, but give her time.
I have a kitty like Annie. When we adopted her she was very quiet and timid and we named her “Boo” because she would jump at the sound of a cricket, let alone an approaching footstep. Boo is now my forever lap cat, still a bit jumpy, but oh so very loving. She purrs non-stop, sleeps on my legs, not next to me but right on me, and the minute I sit down she is there. I’d be willing to bet that Annie will grow to be just like Boo – just give her plenty of time and space and lots of love.

BS-Pet talk-dcx-pt-46Annie is one of many cats waiting to be adopted at the Houlton Humane Society.

There are so many beautiful healthy animals at the Shelter that need new homes. We were so excited that we adopted out eight cats and a dog this past weekend, but for every eight we adopt out, 10 come in, so we never seem to get ahead of it. Only with your help and partnership can we assure placement for all of these animals.
Remember that this coming Friday there is a kitten shower at the Houlton Higher Education Center, 18 Military St. from 9 to 11 am. They will be serving refreshments, there will be prizes, lots of fun, and all you need to do is stop by and bring a gift for a kitten.  Items needed include canned cat food, powdered formula for newborns (you can buy this at Walmart or Aroostook Milling), kitten toys, small kitten beds, heating pads, treats and of course, cat litter.   There will also be a collection box for used ink cartridges and cell phones.
Many thanks to the students at the Houlton Higher Education Center for thinking of this fun and creative way to support the animal shelter.  And yes, there will be Shelter kittens there for you to snuggle, or adopt – just a couple, but there are many more at the Shelter.
Then on Saturday, Nov. 19, Houlton Humane will have a booth at the Sherman Craft Fair. Please stop by and visit, maybe purchase some candles or other items. And if you would like to donate a craft item, homemade baked goods, etc., for this event, please call Heather at the Shelter at 532-2862 and she can let you know where to drop them off.
Thanks to all. Have a great week!
