UMPI women end the season with a win
RANDOLPH CENTER, Vt. — While the University of Maine-Presque Isle women’s basketball team struggled to find its offensive stroke at Vermont Technical College on Friday night, its defense was rock solid.
With a little more than two minutes left in the game, the Owls had only allowed 23 points to the Knights, en route to a 47-30 win.
UMPI finishes their season with a 9-15 record. VTC falls to 5-17.
Scoring was at a premium for both teams in the first half. The Owls’ Emily Pelletier of Fort Kent banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to give UMPI a 19-15 advantage at the break.
While the Knights’ scoring woes continued in the second half, the Owls’ shots began to fall. Pelletier hit a couple of three-pointers while inside Becca Campbell of Washburn and Taylor Ussery were working the offensive boards, pulling down rebounds and getting some key putbacks as UMPI built their lead to 20 points.
Balanced scoring was the name of the game for the Owls. UMPI pulled off the rare feat of winning a game despite not having one scorer in double figures,
“We have had more than a few wins this year that followed the script of defense holds strong until offense finally comes around,” said Owls’ first-year head coach Marc Heidorf. “It can be frustrating for sure, but when you play good ‘D’ you at least give yourself a chance to win.”
