CARIBOU – Vernon P. Leavitt, 94, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012, with his family by his side at a Fort Kent Hospital. Vernon was born in Limestone on October 6, 1917, the son of Roscoe B. and Bessie (Ward) Leavitt. Vernon was married to Emma (Martin) Leavitt for fifty-three years until she passed away in 1994.
Vernon was a member of the Caribou VFW, and served our country with pride as 1st Lt. in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. He underwent combat training on Pt-19s, B-13s and B-26s. It was during that time he was promoted to 2nd Lt. Following his training, he and his crew were sent to Savannah, Ga. to pick up a new B-26 and later flew to Europe. Vernon, with his crew members, endured 35 missions from England, France and Belgium. He was promoted to 1st Lt. and discharged in July, 1945. Following his military service he worked for 38 years at Loring Air Force Base operating heavy equipment.
Vernon is survived by his children, Barbara Lunn Leavitt, Thomas Leavitt and his wife, Shirley, Cheryl Leavitt, Dora Leavitt; and his grandchildren, Lance Lunn, Jared Lunn, Anne Helton and her husband, Donald, Susan Shaw, Renee Leavitt, and Robin Berube and her husband, Mike. In addition, he leaves behind eleven great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Emma, and his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his siblings Jim, Ward, Gerald, Keith, Orman, Dora, Gertrude and Margarette.
Friends and family may call on Thursday, March 29, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. A memorial service will follow visitation Thursday at 8 p.m., Rev. Ellen Cleaves officiating. Interment will be in the spring at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in Limestone. Donations in Vernon’s memory may be made to the Robert A.
