Happy Losers meet

On March 28, the Happy Losers held their weekly meeting at the Congregational Church vestry in Island Falls. Jackie Pratt, the leader opened the meeting with the usual pledge and roll call.
Nine weighed-in and attended the meeting. Pratt was the loser of the week, and Annie Jane Smith was runner-up. Great job ladies! The secretary and treasurer gave reports for the week.
The leader led the program for the week. Eight questions were asked with interesting answers. Meetings are always informative for losing weight. Please feel welcome to the group every Wednesday at 8-8:45 a.m. for weigh-ins and the meeting starts at 9 a.m. Call 365-4884 for more info. See you there!
Island Falls news
On Wednesday, April 4 the Country Jamboree will once again be open to the public for an evening of entertainment. This will be at the Big Valley Snowmobile Club house as before and there will be refreshment available to all who attend.
Country Jamboree was postponed during the winter months and I am sure will be welcomed back by its faithful followers, among those being Clayton and Charlene Webb and I am sure Clayton will participate in the singing. I have recently heard from my sister in New Hampshire that all is very well there and all are enjoying very nice mild weather with no snow around and flowers are popping up very fast and yards are being raked. Some different from what we in the County are experiencing.
We still have snow everywhere. I am still feeding the birds and now have many more as the red-winged black birds are back and the starlings are everywhere. Still have the pesky gray squirrel and I watched him the other day as he leapt from the cedar tree onto the bird feeder, then turned himself upside down, clinging to the feeder very firmly as he attempted to get all the seeds he could from the little spaces where the seeds are. He is nothing but determined in this undertaking. I am still putting out bread and apple pieces for the deer and since this last snow there are tracks everywhere. Haven’t seen the deer, as I don’t watch too closely. Saw two of them about five days ago as they arrived for their lunch, though around dusk. Think they wait until it is quite late in the day now, to eat. Spotted a woodchuck waddling from my yard over to Sam’s and I believe he has a home under my front steps.
Patten Woman’s Club
The Patten Woman’s Club met on Tuesday, March 27 at Eve Rice’s house. The members came in their pajamas and had a waffle breakfast as the refreshments. The Art Show, sponsored by the club at Katahdin High School will be held May 4 at 7 p.m.
Ricker Rumblings

Happy spring and Easter, also April Fool’s Day! Did you get a joke on someone? Things are quiet around Ricker Plaza. Lillian Stairs is still in the Houlton Regional Hospital, as of this writing. Barbara Spellman has been transferred to a Lincoln facility. Some of her friends have been in touch with her.
We had a program at Ricker in the community room on Friday as the girls from the USDA, University of Maine office, demonstrated some breakfast tips and then treated us to the same. We ate breakfast and took some home. They were delicious. We also were given a calendar and some recipes for which we thank them. We’ll have another program by them soon, to be announced as to the date.
Some facts about spring and the month of April. The birds fly back northward and settle down. Butterflies gather nectar. It is planting time for the garden. Arbor Day has been set aside for planting trees. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Diamond is the birthstone for April. I’m sure there are many more facts you can add to this list.
Shirley Nason’s sister has been to visit her recently. Shirley has been walking outside almost every day. The snow that was devoid on the lawn outside of Ricker is piled high again in light of the two snowstorms of late. It won’t last long now because of the warmness of the days. We had two days of very warm weather and one of those days set a record.
This is Holy Week and many of the tenants will be attending church services at the various churches. Have a wonderful and peaceful Easter season everybody. A note about angels: may the love of the angels dwell in your heart and unite your soul with heaven.
