Special Olympics team grateful

To the editor:

On behalf of the Special Olympics Snow Dogs basketball team, I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the greater Aroostook County community for the outpouring of support we have received throughout our season. We began our season-long journey on Nov. 5 and concluded with our participation at the Special Olympics tournament at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham on April 7.

Our season was filled with countless positive accomplishments both on and off the basketball court. As we began our season, we set many goals for ourselves including teamwork, respect for others, appropriate behaviors, sportsmanship, fitness, improving basketball skills, and most important of all having fun.

I can’t begin to describe the pride I felt when I witnessed our 20 Special Olympians participating in the weekend-long festivities in southern Maine. They were a first class group that represented themselves, their families, case workers and community extremely well. It was obvious to me, our assistant coaches and to the countless Snow Dogs’ fans who made the trek to this tournament weekend, the Snow Dogs had achieved and exceeded the goals they set for themselves at the beginning of the season.

It has been and honor and privilege to be the volunteer head coach of the Snow Dogs and I’m already counting the days to the start of next season! Thank you Aroostook County for being our biggest supporters!
