Washburn ATV trails open,

dust an issue in spots

by Tomi Henderson

The next meeting of the Washburn Beavers ATV Club will be held at the Washburn Trail Runners clubhouse on Wednesday, June 6. There will be a potluck to start at 6 p.m. and meeting to follow at 6:30. The meetings will continue to be held at the snowmobile clubhouse for the rest of the season. Members would like to thank the Washburn Trail Runners for the use of the facility.

The club offers a reminder to those out on the trails to please abide by speed signs, in particular the intersection on the Everett Road where a resident on oxygen resides. Slow down to prevent dust problems.

For more information, please visit www.washburnatvclub.com, on facebook or call Club President Roger Hewitt at 455-8315. Please have a safe and enjoyable season.

A Taste of Italy

The Washburn Educational Tour Group will be going to Italy in April 2013 and are having a fundraiser. It will be an authentic Italian dinner, “A Taste of Italy,” on Saturday, June 2, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Washburn Elementary School.

The menu includes: fettuccini alfredo, ziti with marinara sauce, foccaccia bread, bruschetta, salad, drinks and Italian desserts.

Cost is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, $3 for children under 12 and $15 for families. Tickets can be purchased from tour members or at the door. There will also be a silent auction during the evening. If you have any questions, contact Tracy Reed.

Food, Fun and Fitness

The Washburn Memorial Library, along with the Washburn Recreation Department and The University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension Program in Aroostook County, invite all area children in grades 1 through 4 for an exciting afternoon of Food, Fun and Fitness. This event will be held at the Washburn Recreation Department on Friday, May 25, from 2:45-4:15 p.m. in the afternoon.

Children will be participating in a reading session along with a fitness activity and a food lesson. The Washburn Recreation Department is located at 2 Bridge Street in Washburn. Please call Marcie Barbarula at the Recreation Department, 455-4959, with any questions. You also may call Washburn’s librarian, Katherine Veitschegger, at 455-4814.

S.E.A.M. hosts Read Across America event

The University of Maine at Presque Isle S.E.A.M. [Student Education Association of Maine] members provided the after-school program in Washburn with a special treat this spring — they hosted a Read Across America event that had children “traveling” all over the United States.

With the help of UMPI’s S.E.A.M. members and their imaginations, children were able to tour a bat cave in New Mexico, explore seashells in Florida, dig up fossils in Montana and lay on a beach in Hawaii and learn a little about the Hawaiian language. Children were broken into groups and each was given a suitcase and a destination.

At trip’s end, the children “returned” to Maine and had the chance to tell all their friends and teachers all about their adventures and what they learned. Advisor Dr. Tomasz Herzog said S.E.A.M. members did an amazing job of providing a fun and interactive way for children to read and learn about different parts of the U.S. through their Read Across America activity.

Historical Society

The Salmon Brook Historical Society will be holding their annual business meeting on Thursday, May 24, at 6 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center. A potluck supper will be followed by the business meeting. Bring a service setting and either a main dish, dessert or rolls. For more information, call Dennis Harris 455-8279.
