The Houlton High School tennis team was scheduled to play its last match of the season on Tuesday, with the boys’ team at 7-3 and the girls’ squad struggling with a winless season.
The boys are No. 4 in the recent Heal Point standings. They are scheduled to play Tuesday, May 29 in the regional team preliminaries against the No. 13 seed, currently Calais.
Against Presque Isle last Wednesday, the Houlton boys won 3-2, with the girls falling 5-0.
Zach Harvey of Houlton defeated Connor Shaw, 9-8 (7-5), a series his coach Jean Maunder said, “was an unreal match.”
Liam Hughes of Presque Isle topped Lucas Anderson 8-5, while Houlton’s Cody Woods bested Drew Barrett 8-2. In doubles Josh Sullivan/Ethan Nickerson of Houlton toppled Freeman Short/Mike Michaud 8-6, while Presque Isle’s Chris Carroll/Quinn Graves defeated Robby Woods/Lucas Grant, 8-3.
“Even though the girls are struggling, there are bright spots for the future,” said coach Maunder.
The only returning girl’s player was Courtney Bragan, but the team added one junior, one sophomore and six freshmen to its squad.
Against Presque Isle, Presque Isle’s Dani Wolland defeated Bragan, 8-0, while PI’s Kayla Girardin topped Caleigh Sullivan, 8-0, and Mellisa Carson of Presque Isle won by forfeit. In doubles, Blair Bailey/Lora Ireland bested Houlton’s Jackie Condon/Janelle Levesque, 8-0, and Presque Isle’s Bethany Beck/Frances Castro won by forfeit.
