Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High street for its Friday, June 1 meeting. Eighteen ladies were present; 17 were weighed; four of these members were KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly).
Diane Folsom, leader, was in attendance and conducted the meeting. Roll call was given and reports were given by secretary Brenda Lacostic and co-weigher Joanne Scott. The loser of the week was Denise Clark and runner-up was Barbara Grant.
Diane read a letter from Rick Danforth, one of our representatives. Plans were made for the members to meet on Saturday for the workshop in Caribou, June 2. Charlotte Marley made the rounds with the members starting a new contest, concerning a flag. She gave the rules and answered questions, after distributing flags to be filled out according to the rules.
Then Diane proceeded with the program by passing out written sentences for each to read. Some of the sentences were provocative, some were questioning. Each gave a different answer and it made us think. The next meeting is June 8 at the same location. The meeting starts at 9 o’clock after weigh-in, 8-8:45 a.m. every Friday.

Mrs Janette Parady, director of the Agape Food Pantry, extends sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the United States Postal Service food drive. From all of the towns that participated for the Agape Food Pantry we received almost 1,000 pounds of non-perishable food items.
It is only from the generous donations of all who donated that enable us to keep serving those in need. Donations can be made any time, just call Janette Parady at 463-2449 or Anita Baker at 694-3564. Again, many thanks.
The Emerson Store at the Island Falls Historical Society opened June 1 and the hours will be Wednesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. until Labor Day. And the Historical Society will hold its meeting the first Friday of each month at the Tingley House starting at 10 a.m. All are urged to attend to help decide summer activities.
Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Palmer have returned home from spending the winter months at their home in Florida, and also Mr. and Mrs. Don Perrin, who are Florida residents during the winter, are now at their cottage on Mattawamkeag Lake and getting used to black flies again.
Bought myself a new hummingbird feeder the other day and the little fellows are having a ball. Can see them from my kitchen window so can see when the food runs low. Also spotted a fat little groundhog on my lawn the other day and when I went out he scooted for cover under my front steps. He is probably the one I watched going over to Sam’s house awhile back, and hid under Sam’s front steps.
Still have a small flock of crows that arrive nightly to eat what ever they eat on my back lawn. They like to roost in the big birch tree out back and watched as one crow was feeding another while on a branch – probably was a baby crow. Had a small red squirrel one morning and haven’t seen any of the big gray ones lately, probably because I no longer put out sunflower seeds for them to dine on. Still waiting for a deer to show up.

Hello everyone. Hope you all have had a great week with another one to come. This is Sunday, another dull day but no floods, storms, tornadoes, fires and all those hazards. We are blessed. June—the month of vacations, graduations, college plans, school endings, weddings, going-away parties, babies, etc.
Whatever you are celebrating, keep it safe and safe and enjoy yourself. Was happy to see Dean Richardson at Madigan Health Facility this past week. Was visiting Donna Burns, a former tenant here.
Also was able to see Rita Benn and her sister, Ruth McGillicuddy, Helen Brewer, Barbara O’Donnell and a few more. Pauline Megquier is now a tenant there at Madigan, having been a tenant at Ricker Plaza quite a few years ago.
Some of the ladies here have elected to celebrate birthdays during the celebrant’s birthday month. The ladies who were celebrating a May birthday were Connie Barry, Joyce Bryant, Priscilla Brownlow and Harriet Garnett. Happy Birthday everyone! Many more to come. Another party is planned for the June celebrants the last day of June. Thanks to the committee for this fine gesture.
We have a new tenant on the first floor who moved in several weeks ago—Thomas Suitter. Another tenant is Patrick Friel who moved here from Florida. Patrick has sisters Peggy Robinson and Maureen Friel nearby.
And I must add Ruth Ercolani, also a transplant from Florida. Ruth has been with us a couple weeks now. She is Shirley Nason’s sister and they certainly are enjoying each other. It’s nice to have a sister nearby. Now, we have a sister and brother, a set of sisters and mother and son.
Our talk on bed bugs was very interesting. A bed bug is nearly colorless and adult bed bugs are brown to reddish-brown, oval-shaped, and range from 1/4 inch long. Their flat shape enables them to readily hide in cracks and crevices. The body becomes more elongated, swollen and dark red after a blood meal. There is a stigma attached to having bed bugs, so let it go and call the right authorities if you think you have bed bugs. You’ll be doing the right thing.

Houlton Council of Catholic Women

The annual banquet and final meeting of the season for the Houlton Council of Catholic Women met on Tuesday, May 29 in the parish center. Twenty-one members with moderator Rev. David Raymond, Deacon Albert Burleigh and Deacon Ron Ouellette with Wanda, Bonnie Reynolds, and Jackie Junkins as guests were present. A delicious meal was provided by SAVE with Kathy Bither in charge. Father Dave led us in the blessing before the meal.
Father Dave thanked all members of HCCW for dedication to St. Mary of the Visitation Church. He said he appreciated the effort put forth in the various projects.
Co-president Mary Armour called the business meeting to order. Jane Stile, recording secretary, read the last minutes of the May 7 meeting. Financial report was given by Jane Stile, in the absence of Mary Grant. The report will be filed for audit.
A note from Cruz, a former member who now lives in Texas, sent her warm regards via a thank you note read by Lois Downing, corresponding secretary and one from Lynette Dobbs, after becoming a Secular Franciscan.
Janet Barker thanked everyone who helped with First Holy Communion and Confirmation celebration. Father Dave extended gratitude from him too on behalf of the parish family.
Co-president Mary Armour is relocating to South Carolina at the end of the summer. She received a gift from Council.
The door prize was given to Deacon Al. Everyone joined in singing “Happy Birthday” to Rita McDade. The next meeting will be in September. Members are asked to please watch the church bulletin.

The Bridgewater Historical Association would like to welcome everyone back to their hall. Thank you for coming to our Thursday night music with “Outside In.” The music runs from 6 to 9 p.m. So, if you find yourself bored and want something to do, come on out and have some fun at the BHA Hall. Come to dance or just sit and listen. All are welcome. Don’t forget our first Yard Sale is June 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We have lots of goodies for sale.
