PRESQUE ISLE American Flag ColorVaughn Winslow, 86, passed away on Saturday, June 2, at Presque Isle Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Vaughn was born in Mapleton on November 17, 1925, the son of Alden and Ethel (Gregg) Winslow. Vaughn was a Veteran of the United States Army who served in the Pacific Theatre during WW II. He was also a member of the Presque Isle American Legion.
Vaughn worked for SAD #1 as a maintenance superintendent for forty-two years, taking only one day of sick time. He was a meticulous, dedicated man, and a hard worker. He would get up many winter nights just after midnight to travel to the district schools and then to Westfield and Mapleton to make sure the boilers were all working properly. He could figure out almost any problem and come up with a solution. He knew how to make things work and always approached life with a “can do attitude”.
He was a very kind and gentle man with a generous heart. Later in his life, Vaughn exemplified this gift of giving while financially supporting local children’s organizations. It meant a lot to support groups of importance to him. In his free time, he loved the outdoors and had hiked most of the Maine Appalachian Trail, and was an active member of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club. In his early retirement, he made sign markers that can still be found on the Trail today.
Vaughn is survived by his wife, Glenda (Willey) Winslow; his children and their spouses, Sue and Joe Powers of Mapleton, John and Dorothy Winslow of Bel Alton, MD; his grandchildren, Jesse, Katelyn, and Michaela Powers, Bradley Johnson, Kyle Upchurch, Jessica Winslow Blaylock; and his great-grandson, Jackson Blaylock. He also leaves behind his siblings, Pauline Rockefeller of North Haven, CT, Phillip Winslow of Mapleton, Quentin Winslow of Somers, CT, Wilmot Winslow and his wife, Jean of Lowell, MA, Richard Winslow of Upland, CA, and Don Winslow and his wife, Elaine of West Haven, CT. He will also be fondly missed by a special sister-in-law, Helen Willey, who was a great comfort to him this past year.
Friends and family may call on Friday, June 8, 2012, from 10-11 a.m. at Duncan Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church Street, Presque Isle. A funeral service will be held following visitation at the funeral home at 11 a.m., the Rev. Dr. Ken Phelps officiating. A reception at the funeral home will follow funeral services. A committal service will be held on Monday, June 11, at 3 p.m. at Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle.
