Vikes begin soccer season

The Caribou girls split a pair of home games last week to open their season. The Vikes lost to Fort Kent last Wednesday, 2-1, on a goal with 1:47 to play by Alexis Desjardins. Sarah Doak tallied Caribou’s lone goal, which came 10 seconds into the second half. Caribou held a 21-7 shot advantage in the contest.

Two nights later, the Vikes rebounded with a 7-3 triumph over Madawaska. Olivia Sleeper had three goals, Kendra Stephens two and Katelynn Tardie and Erin Patton one each for the winners. Doak turned in a pair of assists, while Delaney Williams and Clara Collins both had one. Goalie Morgan Outing had four saves on nine shots.

The Fort Fairfield Tigers split a pair of matches, beating Limestone-MSSM last Wednesday, 6-0, before falling to Easton Thursday, 3-2.

Fort received two goals and an assist each by Emily Blaisdell and Logan Bubar in the shutout victory over the Eagles. Beckah Pelkey added two goals and freshman Morgan Towle two assists for Fort.

Blaisdell and Janae Libby both scored unassisted goals for FF in the loss to the Bears.

Limestone-MSSM also fell to Easton Saturday, 8-2. Mariah Williams and Shania Bell each tallied goals for the Eagles in defeat. Goalie Jordyn Hopkins recorded 18 saves on 35 shots.

Washburn blasted Van Buren last Wednesday to avenge last year’s playoff loss to the Crusaders. Joan Overman scored five goals and Worcester posted a hat trick in the 12-1 victory. Parise Rossignol scored the lone VB goal.

On the boys’ side, Caribou opened its season with a 2-0 home loss to Madawaska Friday. Ian Lee scored 2:16 into the second half to break the scoreless tie and send the Owls to their third victory of the year without a loss.

Also that day, Washburn dropped a 4-1 decision at home to Ashland. Nick Bragg’s successful penalty kick accounted for the Beavers’ lone goal.

Washburn had beaten Van Buren last Wednesday, 5-1, with Mitch Worcester and Alex Pelletier scoring goals each and Bragg notching three assists.

Easton blanked Fort Fairfield, 3-0, on Thursday and the Tigers also fell at home to Limestone last Tuesday, 2-0.
