MCCLOSKEY, Terry R., 52, BREWER, at T12 R8, Aroostook Country, October 5, 2012. Arrangements are in the care of Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, Brewer.
BREWER – Terry R. McCloskey, 54, died unexpectedly October 5, 2012, at a hunting camp in T12 R8, Aroostook Country. He was born June 22, 1958, in Olney, MD, the son of Russell R. and Eleanor I. (Barber) McCloskey.
Terry was a devoted husband and father. His daughters were the light of his life and he was their “rock”. He was extremely proud of them and all of their accomplishments. He was always there when they needed their Dad, whether it be to help solve any crises big or small, drive Kiley across the country to her new home in California, and then to accompany her when she moved to Denver, or to become a “trucker” for a day in order to drive a full moving truck to the city and expertly parallel park it in front of Meg’s apartment building in New York, unload it, and set up, hook up, fix and assemble everything so his girl would feel at home in her new place. He moved them from place to place many times over the years, and would have moved Heaven and Earth to make them happy.
Terry was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish in Northern Maine. Terry enjoyed many trips to Aroostook County where he hunted and fished with some of the many lifelong friends he had made during the years that he lived in Mapleton and Presque Isle. He also had recently taken up the sport of cycling and enjoyed riding along the Carriage Trails in Acadia National Park. Terry was active in his community and spent nine years coaching PAL basketball until 1991 when he had to devote his time and energy to his new business. His goal for the team each basketball season was to ensure that each player made at least one basket. They were often the team in the league with the worst record but they sure did have fun! Terry ran Hancock Grocery for the past 14 years. He was no stranger to hard work and he was at the store every day before dawn. He grew to love the people in the Hancock community and made countless friends there. He truly enjoyed his work because of the people that he had the pleasure of seeing day to day in his store. He will be missed by both the Brewer and Hancock communities, as well as by the many friends he had in Aroostook County.
Terry is survived by wife of 30 years, Lauren (Dudley) McCloskey; two daughters, Kiley R. McCloskey of Denver, CO, and Meghan B. McCloskey of Richmond Hill, NY; two sisters, Connie DeVany, and her husband, Robert of Easton, and Vicky Bell and her husband, John of Lincoln, IL; two brothers-in-law, John Dudley and his wife, Patti of Orono, and Scott Dudley of Winslow; parents-in-law, John and Karen Dudley of Bangor; nieces and nephews, Adam Umphrey and his wife, Carol of Mapleton, Nicholas Bell of Lincoln, IL, Angela Bell of Lincoln, IL, John R. Dudley and his wife, Ashley of Stockton Springs, Jordan Dudley of Orono; special great-nephew, Ethan Dudley of Stockton Springs, who loved to giggle at Terry’s funny faces; also special to Terry was Gabrielle Cyr, a young lady who was like a daughter to him. They had a standing, weekly ice cream date that Terry always looked forward to. He was also very proud of Gabby and her success in school and sports. Additional close friends were Kenny Stratton of Hancock, Vernie Dean of Mapleton, and his Hancock Grocery family, especially Lynn Warford and Everett Espling.
Terry was predeceased by his parents of Mapleton.
Relatives and friends were welcome to call 5-7 p.m., Monday, October 8, 2012, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 S. Main St., Brewer. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at the same location. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer.
