Two former Caribou residents charged in veterans’ home theft

CARIBOU — A case involving the theft of funds donated to residents of the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou has been solved, with local police charging a man and woman with stealing the charitable offerings.

Scott Long, 39, and Maranda Mancos, 30, both formerly of Caribou, currently residing in New Sweden were charged Dec. 11 with felony theft by Caribou police officers. An arraignment date in Caribou Superior Court has been set for Jan. 25, 2013.

On Nov. 26 the Caribou Police Department received a complaint from the Maine Veterans’ Home located in Caribou in reference to a theft that occurred on Nov. 23. Upon further investigation, it was learned that a donation container sitting in the lobby to benefit the residents of the veterans’ facility and the Veterans’ Christmas Fund was taken.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken and has not been recovered. Officer Mark Gahagan of the Caribou Police Department is the investigating officer.
