Local students receive Principal’s Awards

The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 140 public and private high schools throughout Maine by the Maine Principal’s Association, a professional association that represents Maine’s school administrators.

Local recipients and their principals will join other award recipients throughout the state at an Honors Luncheon to be held at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 6  at 12:30 p.m.
The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association.

Carmichael receives Houlton award
Houlton High School Principal Marty Bouchard announced that senior Allyson C. Carmichael, daughter of Kevin and Marie Carmichael of Houlton, has been selected to receive the 2013 MPA Principal’s Award.
Bouchard described Carmichael as “personable, hard working, well rounded and scholarly.” He added that she “works extremely hard to be the best she can be, and is very well liked by her peers. Her leadership in the classroom and within extra-curricular groups is evident, along with her passion to be a positive influence to those around her. Simply put, Allyson is a super young lady!”

Tarr chosen at SACS
Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School announced that Kristen Tarr of Dyer Brook, a senior, has been selected to receive the 2013 Principal’s Award. She is the daughter of Chris Tarr and Suzette Tarr.
The award sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
“Throughout her years here at Southern Aroostook, Kristen has distinguished herself in the classroom and as a leader in the school and the community,” said Porter.  “She has been very active in many school- and community-related activities that have accentuated her outstanding character and commitment to excellence. She very much deserves this recognition.”
Tarr is involved in a variety of school and community activities.  She has been active in Student Council and is currently serving as studentbody president. Tarr is a member of the National Honor Society and will graduate in June as valedictorian of her class.
She has participated in Dollars for Scholars, Drama Club and varsity club, while attending Southern Aroostook. She is sports editor of the yearbook and has participated in varsity soccer, varsity basketball and varsity softball, earning All-Aroostook honors as a senior in soccer.  Tarr also represented Southern Aroostook as a delegate for Girls State.
She has participated in a variety of volunteer community service projects that include NHS Blood Drive, SACS Hoop Camp, SACS Soccer Camp, and PTO Spring Fling & Christmas Corner, Share the Warmth Clothing Drive, Oakfield Baptist Church, Vacation Bible School and Operation Christmas Child, Breast Cancer Walk, and Brave Hearts and Island Falls Recreation Department.

Grenier receives GHCA award
Ashley Grenier of Danforth, a senior at Greater Houlton Christian Academy has been selected to receive the 2013 Principal’s Award, Head of School John Bishop announced. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Grenier is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Peter Grenier and has attended GHCA all four years of her high school education.
“Ashley has distinguished herself at the Academy by her consistently excellent scholarship and character — exactly the kind of student we want,” said Bishop.

Gallagher receives Katahdin award
Travis Gallagher of Patten, a senior at Katahdin High School has been selected to receive the 2013 Principal’s Award, Principal Eryn Schmidt announced. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Throughout his years at Katahdin High School, Gallagher has distinguished himself in the classroom, as well as being a member of student council and varsity baseball.

Steamer selected in Hodgdon
Jennah Steamer, daughter of Pauline White of Ludlow, granddaughter of Marion Campbell and a senior at Hodgdon High School, has been selected to receive the 2013 Principal’s Award for Hodgdon High School.  The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Steamer has been active in her church through the youth group, Worship Team, and multiple mission trips to Massachusetts, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, and New Jersey. She has been active in the SALT (Students After the Lord’s Truth) group and a leader of the “See You at the Pole” group. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Civil Rights Team, and the Aroostook Substance Abuse Prevention Group. She has been honored with many awards including Outstanding Mathematics Achievement Award, Academic Excellence Award, Community Service Award, Rotary Certificate of Achievement, and multiple Student of the Month and Golden Rule Recipient Awards. She has played varsity softball and varsity basketball, earning a “Player of the Game Award” at one of the games in the 2012 MPA Basketball Tournament.
