Home heating assistance available through LIHEAP

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP) will be administering the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) again this year. LIHEAP provides financial assistance to eligible low-income households to offset the high cost of home heating.

ACAP staff has completed several hundred applications over the telephone for those households with a heating cost who were eligible for LIHEAP last year, own their own home, and have adult members whose only source of income is Social Security or SSI. They are currently mailing out appointment cards to other households that received a LIHEAP benefit last year.
Households that did not receive LIHEAP last year or have not received an appointment card may check with ACAP beginning Wednesday, Oct. 16 for appointment availability. Priority for scheduling this year will be provided to those households that are directly responsible for their own heat. Arrangements may also be made in certain circumstances for disabled individuals to have a home visit by April 30, 2014.
Due to the high volume of telephone calls, ACAP’s phone lines may be busy or unanswered so they ask for the public’s patience as they may be tending to other calls.
Anyone who would like to schedule an appointment or obtain additional information about LIHEAP may call the ACAP Community Services Department at 1-800-585-3053 or 768-3053.
At this time, benefit amounts are unknown and funds are not expected to become available until late October.
For more information on any ACAP programs or to make a tax deductible contribution, call ACAP at 764-3721; e-mail information@acap-me.org, log onto www.acap-me.org, or drop by 771 Main St., Presque Isle.
