Mapleton Elementary School second-grade teachers Athena Hallowell and Cindi Condon are proud to incorporate agriculture in the classroom setting to help them meet curriculum goals in science.

According to Hallowell, “We want children to know how some of the food they eat makes it to their plate. We use our neighbors and friends, Buck Farms, to learn about potato planting, harvesting, and processing. The kids got to visit the fields and pick their own bag of russet potatoes. They learned about the harvester and windrower from Barry Buck and Martha Buck. They also visited the storage facility to see how they are stored for the winter. They learned from Brent Buck just what happens to the potatoes in the storage house. The field potatoes were going to McCain’s to eventually make it to McDonald’s. The potatoes in the storage facility were going to other farmers in the spring as seed potatoes.”
In addition, the second-grade classes also take part in learning about apples by reading books, watching videos, and visiting the SAD 1 School Farm apple orchard and cider mill. During their tour, with the help of volunteers, the students made dried apple rings and homemade applesauce. While working with the apples, the children also measured apple peeling lengths.
This fall, both second grades took part in a daylong celebration of the apple by participating in various activities including math, reading, science, art, and social studies. Hallowell says, “All the activities use the ‘amazing apple’ to help them learn. Many high school students and parents volunteer for this fun day as it is during harvest break. Many of the older students remember taking part in the activities when they were in second grade and come back to volunteer because it was so much fun!”
