On November 23rd, members of the Whittier Congregational Church met after the morning service and spent an hour or so decorating the sanctuary for the coming holiday season. Following this they all met in the vestry for a delicious corn chowder, made by Don McKellar, homemade rolls made by yours truly and chocolate cake for dessert, made by Elinor Savage.
Patti Hartin and Dorothy Brooks have been in Bangor recently on a shopping trip and while there they visited with Walt and Gwen O’Roak, former residents of Island Falls, who had moved to the Bangor area in August. They were delighted and pleased to see old friends from their former hometown and hope to see many more come to visit.
Have had a great number of birds in my feeders during this long cold spell and the peanut butter has been a big attraction to them all. Have had to go out about two to three times a day to keep them all supplied. The chickadees, woodpeckers and blue jays especially like that bit of food to help them survive the cold.
Just happened (luckily) to be looking out my kitchen window the other day and caught a brief glimpse of a female cardinal at one of my feeders. They don’t linger very long and dart away so fast it’s a wonder I saw her at all. Also had two mourning doves looking under the bird feeders the other day for any sunflower seeds that had fallen, so I dashed out and threw a few of the seeds there for them.
Also, the deer, usually four of them, are arriving faithfully every evening, usually when it is quite dark, and I make sure I have the bread and cut-up apples ready for them to have for their supper. If I am lucky I will be lurking behind the door when they come and can get a good look at them. They are very careful, though, and if they see a movement in the window of the door they are off in a flash, leaving the apples and bread behind, but come morning it is all gone. These animals sure keep me busy tending to them!
